Only a moment later, Sonia alerts and pulls out her phone. Her face is blank as she reads, but her tell is that creeping redness in her cheeks.
She could play it off to anyone else that she’s just fielding a text from an employee calling off. But she can’t hide anything from me.
To my delight, she types something out, and a second later, her text appears on my screen.
It’s only fair then that I get to see you naked should I let you do that.
I almost laugh out loud.
It’s true, I’ve been clothed during both of our encounters. Sonia is so perfect it feels almost embarrassing to try and measure up to her.
It’s nice, though, to be wanted that way.
I type out another text.
I don’t know if you’ve been good enough for that.
I watch Sonia read, then look at me over the heads of all the employees.
It’s almost as if we’re the only two people here. Our eyes lock and burn into one another’s.
She might have been right that it’s a problem to mix business and pleasure.
However, I think that’s a good problem to have.
Sonia only tears her gaze away to type something else out.
I would be very good if I got to see you naked, sir.
I cough.
Solomon pats my back. “Are you alright?”
“Fine, I’m great.” My smile must be coming off as maniac.
Before I can type out another text to Sonia, there’s another notification on my phone. From Seth. I rush to open it.
It’s been a few days since I asked Solomon to ask his stepson if he could set up a meeting between Nate and me. I assumed no news was bad news.
Hey, Edwin. Dad asked me to help you get in touch with Nate. He’s coming over for dinner tonight with Mason and me. I don’t like tricking him, but I don’t think you’re going to get him to ever agree to a meeting with you. So, now is as good a time as ever.
I don’t waste a single second texting back.
What time?
I amon pins and needles the whole day knowing I’m going to see Nate tonight. So much so, that I remain inmy office for most of the day.
I also left Sonia hanging mid sext. It’s not because I don’t want to talk to her. I just can’t today. And this is where I have fallen short with every woman I’ve ever cared for. I always put myself first.
Today, though, I justify that I am putting Nate first. Sonia can understand that, right? Maybe that will make me even more wanted in her eyes.
As I ride the elevator up to Seth’s apartment, I try to collect my thoughts. There’s not a lot I can plan, though, considering how awry everything went at the beach.
I just want a clean slate. I want to offer an apology. I’d also like one in return, but I’ll settle for a hug. Or a smile. Anything that will let me know that Nate will let me in just a bit more. The dream goal is to integrate back into his life completely.
Baby steps, though.
As Seth instructed me, the door to his apartment is open. I stand at the threshold for a long moment collecting myself.
