Laney is struggling through the front door with a few bags, attempting to make as few trips as possible.

I rush over to help her and reach for one of the bags. “I got it.”

Our fingers brush as I take it.

Laney looks up at me with a shy smile. “Thank you.”

“Of course.” I take another bag.

“Mason…”

I only smile at her and start over toward Nate’s car.

My heart thuds in my chest as she follows me.

Since returning from the hike yesterday, things have been quiet.

We are tiptoeing around each other as if we have secrets we’re trying to hide. Except we all know the secret: we had a threesome in the woods. And it was fucking amazing.

I guess my secret is I’d like it to happen again. Andagain. I don’t want it limited to a vacation in the woods. I want to bring this home with me, whatever it is.

I wanted to bring it up last night, the idea that maybe there was something more complicated happening between the three of us. However, there’s not really a good way to bring up to your best friend and the lover you share that you want to be in a poly relationship when none of you have tried it out in the past.

Not to mention it feels like there is still so much unsaid. About Laney and me. Our past. Between Nate and me. Our rivalry now turned partner-sharing?

What is my life?

Anyway, I put the bags in the open trunk of Nate’s car, take the one bag Laney was carrying and shove it in there too. “Is that everything?”

“Should be.” She shrugs.

I slam the trunk closed and then look back at her.

Laney has her arms crossed over her chest like she’s cold.

And I’ll give her that it’s a bit chilly out with the delicate spring breeze and the shade from the trees.

However, from the way her eyes are looking everywhere but my own, I have a feeling it has more to do with me than the temperature. “You’re all set for the long drive? Have some coffee and snacks?”

“I’ll be fine, Mason.” Laney puts on a sweet smile.

“I know you will be, just want to make sure you’re…you know, set.”

Laney finally meets my gaze but doesn’t speak.

I lick my lips.

Fuck, this is hard. I want to say goodbye the right way. With my lips and my hands, with my whole self.

“You’ll be safe too? You won’t speed?”

“No, I’ll be good.”

She snorts. “Believe it when I see it.”

“Hey, it’s not my fault people don’t know how to drive on the highways.” I smile.

Laney glances at my truck in the driveway. “I just don’t want you driving that thing like a sports car.”
