And since we returned, she’s barely in the house unless she’s working with me. And if sheishome, she keeps to her room.

She might not realize it, but her distance is obvious.

I wonder if my heartbreak is as clear.

Today, I’m sitting in a chair, facing the big windows in the living room, running my fingers over my lips, contemplating life.

I’m better now. That much is obvious from the way I traversed all of Pollard’s hikes and nature trails while we were gone. Sure, I had a moment of weakness here and there, and no, I don’t mean sexual weakness, though there’s an argument for that too.

Someone walks into the room, and I glance back at the doorway to find Sonia running in like a chicken with her head cut off.

She carries a pair of heels in one hand and her raven hair is falling out of its most often well-kept bun.

I frown. “You good?”

She huffs. “I can’t find my purse.”

“Your purse?”

“Yes,my purse.” She stalks around the room.

She stops in front of a chaise and lifts a cream-colored throw pillow before grunting, “I thought I put it down in here when I came home last night. But it’s gone.”

“You want me to help you look?” I begin to stand.

Sonia throws out her hand. “No, you sit. You rest.”

“Sonia, I can walk. It’s literally fine.”

Sonia watches me stand to my full height. Her aggravation melts off her face, and she shakes her head. “I’m still not totally used to it.”

I pose, standing long and lean with my hands splayed out. “So, what do you think?”

Sonia laughs. “You’re ridiculous.”

I still get pangs of disbelief that this is our life. That we went from lovers to exes to our now strange form of friendship that involves her dating my dad.

Sometimes I’m hit with a wave of nostalgia. In the past, a laugh like that would have been followed by a kiss. Now it’s just Nate and Sonia. Friends, roommates, family. No attraction remains. It’s clear now we were never meant to be.

“Okay, well, seeing as you’re up, you can help me. Or else your dad is going to kill me.” She returns to her dower expression.

“Highly doubt my dad will kill you.”

Sonia shakes her head, rooting around in one of the couches. “We have a board meeting today. We’re still dealing with the fallout from the whole Farley thing and the tenure of our interim COO is about to expire, so–”

“You should be the CFO.”

“I’ve already rejected that offer.”

Interesting…

“What’s your bag look like?”

“Black. Like an envelope.”

“Okay…” I glance around the living room of various black leather furniture. Kind of like looking for a needle in a haystack except for the shiny silver emblem that catches my eye from underneath the chair dad usually sits to tie his loafers.

I know I should put Sonia out of her misery, but my days have been so long and lonely with Laney’s avoidance, Iwouldn’t mind her company a few minutes longer. “Why do you still work at the club anyway?”
