Laney’s never been anything but completely professional, though.

Which makes the moments when I feel like we’re flirting even more confusing.

“Okay, I’ll just step outside. Call for me if you need anything.”

I shrug off my robe and throw off my shirt before pushing myself up from my chair until my feet are flat on the ground. I catch myself on the edge of the bed and then take my time to straighten myself up to standing.

I’m doing a lot better than Laney knows. Thananyoneknows.

It’s not some big ruse. It’s probably good that I take my time getting better and stronger anyway. But if anyone knew I was as strong as I already am, I don’t know if Laney would still be sticking around.

And I’m not ready for her to go. Not yet.

Something has been growing between us. Something wrong, yet raw and unavoidable.

I’ve always thought she was an attractive girl, but she belonged to Mason. And I would never, ever cross that line.

Each day over the past three months, my desire hasgrown, a connection calcifying bit by bit with each exchange of laughter, each smile, each brush of her hand.

On more than one occasion I’ve had to pray that she doesn’t see my erection as she helps me out of the chair.

I’m thankful that’s all in working order after my accident, however, it’sinconvenientat times.

I peel off my boxers, then pull on the sweatpants and an old band shirt with a fraying neckline. One of those stoner bands Laney always gives me shit for.

I smile to myself as I settle back into the chair. “Okay, I’m decent.”

Laney cracks the door and peeks in at me. Her jaw drops. “How did you do that?”

“Magic.” I wriggle my fingers.

“You even managed to get the robe out from under you…” She glances to the robe on the floor.

Shit. Didn’t cover my tracks. “You know all you have to do is shift from side to side, pull it out from under you, and presto chango.”

“Houdini.” She grins as she comes toward me.

Every time Laney comes toward me and leans down to help me out of the chair, my heart flutters like she might be coming in for a kiss.

Of course, it would be complicated if she decided to close that space between us, let her pillowy lips land on mine.

Then, instead of clinging to her like a baby as she lifts me out of the chair, I’d pull her into my arms and kiss her back.

This time, however, is like any other. She lifts me, I manage the strength I’m supposed to have in her eyes to get me into bed. Then, I lean back onto the pillows as she helps my legs up onto the mattress.

“How are your legs feeling?”

“Still tingly. But watch–” I spread my toes apart back and forth. “Couldn’t do that a few months ago.”

“Truly a modern marvel,” Laney jokes, although the smile on her face indicates actual excitement.

She leans over me to grab another pillow, fluffs it, and then places it behind me. “That enough for you?”

Hard to answer her with complete honesty when her chest is right near my face like this. “Perfect.”

“Good.” Laney reaches for the blankets and starts to pull them up over me.

“Did you…?”
