“You sure?”

Mason nods. “If this is going to work, she and I are going to have to talk about what happened.”

My heart plummets in my chest. “You sure? I mean, do you think you can handle–”

“She broke my heart. And I still don’t get why.” He shakes his head. “This is going to require ultimate trust between the three of us. And if she agrees to it, I’m going to need to know that I can trust her. You know?”

I smile. “I do.”

Mason sips his drink, leans on his knees, and lets his head drop.

I can tell how difficult he knows this will be. I wish I could shoulder the burden. But this is his and Laney’s alone.

“I trust you, Mase.”

Mason looks up, tilts his head to the side, smiles. “I trust you, Nate.”

Just like that, step one is complete.

Now, Laney.

MASON

I paceoutside the door to the Lyons penthouse. I’vebeenpacing for about half an hour now. I tried to time it better so I wouldn’t have to wait outside, anxious and unsure how things are going to go. But I also couldn’t sit on my hands at my apartment.

So, I headed over early, and now I’m here, stewing, repeating to myself all the things I want to say to her once I’m sure Laney will be available.

The door tears open, and Laney is standing there looking bigger than she actually is. Her eyes are locked on me, mouth half open, showing her teeth. Expression unreadable. “Are you serious?”

I take a step back. “Huh?”

“Nate.” It that supposed to be an answer?

I realize now she’s pulling on a light overcoat and furrow my brow. “Are you going somewhere?”

“Walk with me.” She brushes past me to the elevator.

I follow her, of course I follow her. “What’s going on?”

Laney presses the button, then presses it again as if somehow that will make the elevator come faster. “I toldNate I was going out to grab a few things from the bodega around the corner, and he freaked out, said that I couldn’t, and when I asked why, he told meyou–”

The elevator doors open, and she hustles inside.

I follow, standing as far as I can from her because it’s clear she needs a wide berth at the moment.

I don’t speak, just watch Laney press the button for the lobby.

“He told me you were coming over to talk to me. Imagine my surprise! I didn’t realize we had a meeting!”

“Why are you so upset?”

The elevator starts to plummet simultaneously with my stomach.

“Because you two are talking about me. Planning and scheming and conniving and–”

“We’re worried about you!”
