“My sentiments exactly.”

“You’ll have to carry me out of here,” I say.

I feel Nate’s laugh in his belly. “You say that like we haven’t done that before.”

I cast a look back at the dance floor where Edwin and Sonia have somehow commanded the entire space.

Sonia leans on Edwin’s chest as they sway back and forth. No words need to be spoken. They just…are.

“I want that,” I say in a soft voice. Almost an accident.

Mason and Nate follow my gaze and watch too.

After a moment, Nate asks, “What do you mean, Laney?”

I’m not willing to say it out loud. Seems foolish and, to be honest, greedy.

Nate and Mason have already committed themselves to me in every way a man can. Am I really getting hung up on the fact I can’t marry them?

I keep silent for a few seconds before I sigh. “Nothing.” I force a smile. “It’s just been a beautiful night, don’t you think?”

Mason and Nate exchange a look.

All of a sudden, Mason grabs me and hurls me over his shoulder.

I scream with laughter.

Are they really so riled up they can’t wait just a bit longer to make a subtler exit?

“Hold on, Lane.” Mason starts to walk.

Once it’s clear I’m not going to wriggle away, Mason slides me into his arms bridal style. That’s when I realize he’s not walking us toward the exit doors, but the doors at the back of the ballroom that open up onto the massive estate gardens where the ceremony took place earlier.

“Where are we going?”

“It’s a surprise.” Mason smiles.

Nate strides ahead of us, meets us at the top of the stairs that descend to the grounds.

“Alright, Lanes,” Nate says as Mason sets me down on the ground. “Cover your eyes and count to ten.”

Mason interjects, “Fifteen.”

Nate rolls his eyes. “Fine, fifteen.”

“Guys, what’s goingon?”

All I receive in return are sneaking smiles, the same boyish glints in their eyes.

We all have our own separate shared languages, foreign to the outside ear or eye.

I am determined one day to figure theirs out.

Mason sighs, “Cover your eyes. Count to fifteen. Then come find us.”

I stare for a moment longer, then bring my hands up to my eyes to cover them.

“Perfect. Start counting.” Nate plants a kiss on my cheek.
