“No,” I whisper.

I know that truck. Used to ride as a passenger on the bench. I’vemade lovein that truck.

So, it doesn’t surprise me when the driver door opens, and Mason steps out.

“Nate–”

He works me harder, but my focus is gone. My mood is gone.

“Nate,stop.”

Finally, Nate rips away. “What? What is it?”

“Mason!”

Nate’s concern melts a bit. “Laney, we talked about this. We’re–”

“No, no! Mason. He’shere.” I point down at the driveway.

As Nate lays eyes on the truck, on Mason having stepped out and removed his aviator sunglasses like he’s some sort of dapper classic movie star, the color from his face drains. “What the fuck?”

“How did he know we were here?”

“Well, I told him, but–”

“Youinvitedhim?!” I hiss, pushing him off and stumbling to my feet.

Nate looks affronted. “Telling him andinvitinghim are two different–”

Out of the corner of my eye, Mason starts to walk toward the house. “He’s coming!”

I rush back into the house, Nate following close behind me.

I try to sort out my hair, my dress, ignoring the unfulfilled orgasm still aching between my legs and the dampness now in my panties. “Fuck, fuck, fuck!”

“It’s okay, just relax. Be cool. If we’re cool, he’ll–”

“Don’t follow me so close!” I spit over my shoulder before descending the stairs to the front room. “Okay, okay. Just act natural.”

I scan the lower floor. What the hell can I do tolooknatural? I left my book upstairs along with my glass of iced tea. And I’m not wearing my scrubs, which means I’m probably not amidst a session with Nate.

There’s a knock at the door now. Through the frostedglass slats in the door, I can see Mason, lurking, waiting for us.

“Oh, my god.”

Nate grabs my shoulder. “Just go pretend like you’re napping. On the couch.”

“Nate?” Mason calls out, his voice muffled by the barrier between us. “Laney?” His voice when he says my name is weaker. As if he wishes he didn’t need to call for me. Couldn’t call for me.

I am frozen, standing in my spot, so nervous that we’re about to get found out. But there’s another emotion there too.

Excitement, maybe? The tiniest bit of excitement to see Mason.

The chaos in my head is unintelligible.

I want to be left alone with Nate, but I want to see Mason too? I have to sort out my priorities.

Nate pushes me on the arm. “I’ll get the door and cover you.”
