I don’t blame him when he looks at plans and plots all day.

On the other hand, I’m talking with people, interacting.

Books give mealonetime.

When we enter, a bell dings.

The elderly man behind the desk gives us a warm smile and returns to the rickety tome he’s reading.

“You lead,” Mason says in a low voice.

Though bookstores don’t have the same rules as libraries, it’s hard not to want to whisper in a store like this.

Floor-to-ceiling shelves create a maze in the store. Books of all kinds, new and used, pepper the shelves. The store smellsamazing. Old pages and leather and glue. Almost edible if it was the smell of bound stacks of paper.

Mason and I wind through the store, him tailing me, looking where I look, touching what I touch.

“Jeez, copycat much?” I tease.

“Listen, I’m here to makeyouhappy,” he retorts. “Who cares what I look at?”

A warmth spreads across my chest.

Do I really deserve someone who wants to make me happy? Just because?

I’m not sure I do. Not after how I hurt him.

“Ah, here we are.” We arrive in the fantasy section. That will distract me from my spiraling thoughts.

“Still a fantasy girl, huh?”

“You know it.” I give him a sassy wiggle of my head. “Just finished a book, and I need a new one to bide my time until the next one comes out…”

Mason glances up and down the shelves. “Yeah, I saw you were reading that series I got you.”

Oh, shit.

Masondidintroduce me to that series, didn’t he? Hebought me the first book of that series. I’d forgotten until just now.

He might not have been a reader himself, but on occasion, when I was going through a tough time, he’d show up with new books and chocolate for me. Always researching the best new authors and popular books.

Nowthat’sa good boyfriend.

“Yeah, it’s…my favorite.”

He smiles to himself, crimson creeping up in his cheeks.

“But I’m all caught up, so need to find a new one.”

“Can I help?”

I giggle. “I have a feeling you won’t know how to find exactly what I’m looking for.”

Mason circles me before I can continue down the shelf. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Oh, Mason, sweetie…” I touch his chest, making sure to modulate my hand so it’s not too firm against him. “You know, fantasy comes in many shapes and sizes.”

His eyes widen.
