It is…Right? “But…Nate?—”

“I’ve talked to him.We’ve discussed.”

I frown. “You talked about me?”

Mason’s lips curl to the side. “You say that like it’s a bad thing.”

“It’s…” Not bad. Not good either, though. “I don’t know how to feel.”

With a final kiss to my cheek, Mason sighs. “You don’t have to know right now. Just consider.” He presses his face into my hair, breathing in deep.

My body shivers with memory. Tears rush into my eyes.

“I miss you, Laney.” His voice is so soft. “I want you back.”

I have to keep myself from gasping. I’m afraid I might crush him if I respond.

I didn’t expect any of this. A little flirting, sure. Some light touches, fine. A kiss? A little more unexpected. A declaration?

Unprecedented.

Now what the hell am I going to do? I don’t know if I will ever be able to choose between them.

MASON

It’s beenhard to sleep for weeks now. With Laney always on my mind, and my relationship with Nate on the line, I never seem to be able to rest.

One of the benefits of that up here at the cabin is that I haven’t missed a sunrise since I got here. This being my third morning, I decided I wanted a better vantage point to take it all in. So, I went for a hike, climbed to a lookout point in the chilly morning air.

There’s nothing like nature to make you realize just how small all your problems are.

Sitting up there on a rock, watching as the sun bursts onto the horizon…makes everything fade into the background.

Since my moment with Laney in the bookstore two days ago, I have been filled with a strange peacefulness.

Everything will work out as it’s meant to. That doesn’t mean I don’t have an opinion on how it works out. I’d like her to be mine…in one way or another.

But I will live. We all will. Whether it’s together or apart.

And though apart feels like it might kill me, it won’t.

All these thoughts of karmic bliss, though, are gone by the time I get to the bottom of the hill and approach the cabin.

Back to the tension of the house, back to wondering what Nate and Laney are talking about when I see them together, back to the longing glances we both share with her.

Back to the mystery of it all.

I climb the stairs to the veranda, go to open the sliding glass door, but stop when I see movement through the window.

Laney and Nate are up and about. Or I should sayLaneyis up and about. Nate is leaned against the wall, sliding into a wall sit.

Because of her scrubs, I know that they’re working on his PT. She always makes sure to wear scrubs for work, establishing a firm line between professional and personal. Superman and Clark Kent.

They’re talking all the while, going back and forth about something that’s making Laney smile and blush.

Her joy overshadows my jealousy.
