She turns and looks at me questioningly. “Yes?”

I take a few steps forward, closing the space between us again. Since she’s standing up on one of the steps, we’re nearly at the same height.

“Can I kiss you?” I ask her.

Her eyes go wide. “Um…I…” She clears her throat. “Yes.”

I smile. Then I lean forward, tilting my head slightly to the side, and press my lips to hers.

LINDSEY

Iwobble as I walk into the house, my lips still tingling from the kiss Theo just gave me. When Aimee comes out of the kitchen and sees me, she immediately starts laughing.

“He kissed you, didn’t he?” she asks.

“You can tell?” I ask in a daze.

“Mm-hmm. It’s all over your face, Linds.” She pulls me over to sit with her on the couch, where she curls up her legs, looking at me with eager eyes. “Well? Tell me all about your evening!”

And so I do. I tell her about how he changed his plans and took me to a vegan restaurant. I tell her about how we were burger twins, which makes me laugh again. And, more than anything, I gush about how sweet of a guy Theo is.

Aimee presses her lips together to suppress a smile. “Look at you. You’re smitten with him.”

I scoff. “I’m notsmittenwith him. I just like him.”

“Well, either way, it’s about time you were interested in someone. Is he a good kisser?”

I feel my cheeks heat. “It’s sort of a blur, but yes. From what I can remember.”

“It sounds like you need to do it again to know for sure,” she says, breaking into a full grin. “Are you going to see him again tomorrow?”

“Maybe. I wasn’t sure if you had anything planned for us.”

“Nope. Tomorrow’s wide open. You should definitely see him again.”

“But it’s like I’m abandoning you, Aimee. I feel horrible.”

“Don’t!” She grabs my hand and gives it a reassuring squeeze. “This is exactly the type of thing I wanted for you. I’ll be totally fine keeping myself entertained. Hell, maybe I’ll find a hot lifeguard for myself.”

I laugh. “If you do, promise me that we’ll go on a double date before we leave.”

“Of course.”

A yawn escapes my lips, and Aimee and I say goodnight. I get ready for bed and then snuggle down under the covers, a smile on my face as I drift off to sleep.

“Lindsey?”

I blink my eyes open, drowsily murmuring in response. “Yeah?”

“Theo’s here.”

The rest of my drowsiness vanishes. I pull myself up in bed and squint at Aimee, who’s sticking her head through my cracked-open bedroom door.

“What do you mean, he’s here?” I ask, my voice raspy. “What time is it?”

“Six o’clock. He said he has a surprise for you.”
