“We’ve got a business weekend coming up this weekend and my darling partner here had her luggage go missing. She’s got nothing but the clothes she traveled in today, and we desperately need to rectify it for her.”

“Oh, how devastating.” The woman put her hand to her heart and seemed genuinely concerned, no longer looking at me as if I didn’t belong in the store. “Don’t you worry about it anymore. I’ll get one of the other girls and we’ll get you equipped for everything again in no time.”

She took my other arm and immediately began guiding me toward the women’s section of the clothing store, near the back. It was mostly empty, but the woman beckoned to another member of staff and encouraged her to come over as well.

I wasn’t sure what to make of the clothing, but it didn’t appear as if I was going to get much say. Not only did the store clerk begin picking things off the racks, getting my size right scarily quickly, but Lukas started to do the same. Item after item was held up against me and decided on by the two women and Lukas with little shakes of heads or nods to each other.

Now and then, one of the women scurried off to get an accessory, shoes, a purse or other element of an outfit and bring them over. I barely said anything, trailing after them and holding still while clothes were held up. No one asked my opinion at all. I was treated as if I was in shock from losing my luggage, the story Lukas had given quickly passing around the store.

When four full outfits had been chosen, from underwear to hats I might like to consider, the hustle and bustle came to a sudden stop.

“There. Shall we get you to the changing rooms and see if these fit or we need to adjust?” The woman smiled as if there was only one answer to the question, and over her shoulder, I could see the mischievous look on Lukas’ face. He was enjoying this and the way it was crazy to me.

I didn’t want to think about who might be paying for this or have to actually decide on what would be bought and what wouldn’t, so I merely nodded and, once again, let myself be led away.

The changing rooms were part of a whole area off to one side. There was a large sofa, several smaller seats, and a few curtained boxes off to each side. It was clearly intended as an area where women brought their purchases to relax a little and try them on in comfort, anyone accompanying them able to properly put their feet up.

I’d only ever seen a changing room this luxurious once, and that had been while on a school trip to London. I’d gone with some of the cool kids to a department store and been happy enough to carry clothes options for one of the other girls. That’s when I’d been able to see inside some of the best stores. At the time I had hoped it might endear me to the kids when we were back in school, but they’d acted like we’d never even met the following day, and I couldn’t come close to affording anything the two girls had purchased.

I was sent into the changing room with the outfits one at a time and did my best not to panic when I noticed some of the price tags. I could afford the clothes if I spent some of the money Sarai was paying me, but it was also more than I had spent on clothes in my entire adult life, let alone on just four outfits.

Lukas appeared entirely relaxed, however. While I was changing into the first set, they made us both coffee, and once the verdict had been given that I looked adorable and simply had to keep every part of it, we were even offered cake.

“Cake sounds perfect.” Lukas beamed, not even giving me a chance to say no to the clothes or the food.

“Here, try this outfit on next. It’s a bit different, but I think it’s going to suit you,” Jane said, the elder of the two women who had tasked themselves with helping me, handing me the next set of clothes.

I didn’t know if I was as enthusiastic, but Lukas gave me a thumbs-up and I knew I wasn’t going to get out of this one. This was a strange way of helping me, however. I couldn’t figure out what I made of his lie on my behalf. Was he ashamed of how I dressed normally? Did he think I always looked as if I’d just got off a plane, or didn’t have my best clothes with me?

So many thoughts went through my head, but with each outfit I tried on, I had to admit that they’d picked out clothes that made me look good.

There were two pairs of slacks, one white and the other a dark navy, both of them paired with floral blouses that complemented the colors and a bra that definitely accentuated the best of that part of my figure. It definitely wasn’t something I’d have normally worn, normally choosing tight, slim-fit jeans and T-shirts, but I couldn’t argue with how it brought out a different physical feature and left others more hidden.

One of those had been my first outfit, but now I was trying something else on. A one piece, this appeared to be a dress at first but it was really pants with an interesting cut that allowed them to flow around me. The pattern and shape of the top part wouldn’t have been my choice either, the neckline plunging in the middle.

The top half was made of a very stretchy material, and as soon as I put it on I gawked at myself in the mirror. It might be different, but damn, did I look good!

CHAPTER SIXTY-THREE

Lukas

I couldn’t tell if Kit was enjoying herself or not, and I wasn’t sure what she made of the clothes we’d chosen for her to try on, but I was hoping this was a positive experience for her. She’d looked so good in the first outfit that I’d been very grateful when one of the assistants had suggested that we all had some cake.

It gave me something else to focus on for a moment and a plate to hold in a very strategic location. Kit was hot, and these two women had managed to find clothes to make every asset she had stand out. I was already aching to get her back to my apartment and ravage her.

Still, it nagged at me that she might not be enjoying this. She was saying very little and hadn’t chosen anything herself, almost as if she was scared to have an opinion. After seeing her shopping for furniture for the interior designs she had been doing, I’d have thought she’d have loved this.

I knew my lie could have confused her, but I hadn’t wanted anyone else making catty remarks and suggesting that she was in the wrong place or didn’t have the money for what they were selling. I didn’t know for sure if she did have the money, but I knew Sarai and that she wouldn’t be paying Kit close tonothing for her work. And Sarai had been covering all Kit’s other expenses.

It could have been one of the reasons that Kit was being more reserved than I’d have hoped. The price tags. But I intended to pay for all of this. I wasn’t going to bring her to a place like this, decide on clothes for her to change into, and then not pick up the bill at the end of it. But it was still likely to make her hesitate.

Did she not understand that this was my way of helping her?

As she appeared in her second outfit, I was even more grateful to have my crotch hidden. The dress hugged her figure and then flared in all the right places to make her look curvy and as if she flowed gracefully across the floor.

It was everything it needed to be and I could tell by the look on her face and the way she twirled as she came out that she knew it too.

“Definitely that one,” I said.
