I walk down the hall toward the living room. My parents and Greyson sit together on the couch, their laughter filling the room. My presence goes unnoticed until I chime in with a hearty greeting.

"Hey, I'm here!"

The smiles on my parents’ faces fade slightly, but they stand to greet me. Greyson rushes past them, enveloping me in his arms.

“Good to see you, sis!” He always brings a genuine smile out of me.

“Glad someone is happy to see me,” I mumble under my breath.

"Mom and Dad are happy you’re here, I'm sure," Greyson assures me. But we both know they wouldn’t care if he was the only one here.

"Brinn. Come help me set the table!" Mom calls.

I shrug at my brother. "Would you look at that? She needs me for something."

Enter fake smile, “Coming.”

Mom is dishing out the main course in the kitchen. I take the tray of turkey from her and settle it on the dining table. Several trips later, I finally have the chance to sit and eat, along with everyone else.

"How's work?" Mom asks as she passes the potatoes.

"Fine."

“Your classes?” Here comes the green beans.

“Also, fine,” I answer with my best grin, sending the bowl to Greyson.

This is exhausting. But it’s their anniversary, hold it together.

"Will you be graduating at the top of your class?"

I gulp. "My internship affects it, so I don’t know yet.”

“Brinn’s final client is Jackson Reed,” Greyson pipes in.

Mom’s eyes light up. “Your friend from childhood? Doesn’t his family own that security firm that’s so successful?”

“Yes. Shieldify,” Greyson answers.

“If Brinn does areallygood job, he’ll give her a powerful recommendation.” He emphasizes the wordreallylike he already knows about the bribe. But that’s impossible, Jackson just mentioned it to me a few hours ago.

I smirk at Greyson.

“Is this true, Brinn”? Dad asks.

“Yes. Greyson’s insight is spot on as always.” I roll my eyes playfully at my brother. “A recommendation from his family name would look amazing on my transcript.”

"That's fantastic news!” Dad joins in on Mom’s excitement. "You must make sure he’s impressed with your skills.”

Dad gives me a double thumbs up.

I take a cleansing breath and show him my pearly whites. “Of course, I won’t let you down.”
