“The swelling looks better. I’m going to work on a few trouble spots.” Gently, she massages my knee, working to alleviate the pressure.

Her wavy brown hair falls over her shoulder into her face. Instinctively, I reach out and push it behind her ear.

Startled, she looks up at me. “Jackson. No.”

She quickly rolls my pant leg down and moves to the window, creating a void between us.

I don’t know what to say, so I say nothing at all.

The rest of the ride is spent in more awkward silence.

I’m thankful when the dress shop comes into view. Kennedy comes around to open the door for Brinn. She gracefully takes his hand and exits the car. I sit for a few moments, internally scolding myself for yet another stupid decision.

I didn’t plan on it. I just couldn’t help myself. When she’s that close, I can’t think straight.

The smell of new fabric hangs in the air when we enter the store, a distinct aroma that triggers memories of shopping trips with my mom. She always brought me along to give my opinion on gowns for various events. Without a daughter, I was her only option.

The tinkling bell announces our arrival. Kathleen, the owner, immediately recognizes me and rushes over. “Jackson! How long has it been?”

I’m thankful she doesn’t ask me about the cane.

“I haven’t seen you in ages. What brings you in? I don’t see your mother anywhere.”

“It’s good to see you, Kathleen. We’re doing a little dress shopping today for my friend, Brinn.”

I move to put a hand on her back before thinking better of it.

The interior of the store hasn’t changed at all since I was young. Mannequins adorned in intricate gowns stand like silent sentinels, each ensemble telling a story of glamour and grace. There’s a symphony of colors, fabrics, and styles, meticulously curated to cater to the diverse tastes of the store’s clientele.

Mirrors line the walls, reflecting the beautiful dresses from every angle. Soft lighting from chandeliers enhances the allure of each garment, creating a sophisticated ambiance.

Brinn smiles and extends her hand. “Pleasure to meet you. Your shop is amazing.” Her eyes sparkle as she takes it all in.

“Thank you, dear. Been here for over twenty years. Jackson’s mother has always been one of my most loyal customers.” She gestures toward a rack of dresses. “Let’s take a look and see what you like.”

Kennedy and I sit on one of the valor couches outside the fitting room. It feels like melting into a cloud. I watch Brinn disappear around the corner.

“You really did it this time.” Kennedy elbows me as he laughs.

I sigh, rubbing my temples. “I know. I never thought she’d get so upset. I’m not sure how I’ll ever get her to help me now.”

“Maybe you can just tell her how much you enjoy her company. It’s kind of obvious.”

“What? No. I don’t. Ok. Maybe I do. A little. But I can’t tell her that after the way I treated her for so many years. She’s not going to care.”

“You never know.” Kennedy puts an arm around my shoulder.

“This isn’t about my feelings. It’s about the future of the family business. Nothing else matters right now.”

Before I can say more, Brinn walks out of the dressing room. The sight of her momentarily takes my breath away. She’s wearing a midnight blue gown that enhances her every curve.

The neckline gracefully descends into a subtle V, teasing a glimpse of her collarbone that draws my full attention. I lick my lips, boy would I love to—

“Ahem.” Brinn clears her throat.

Busted.

“You look simply radiant, Miss Parker.” Kennedy distracts her from my awkward moment.
