My gaze goes to the front of the hotel. Please tell me my eyes are deceiving me. There’s a very familiar white Mercedes-Benz pulling into the valet. A mop of blonde hair emerges from the car.

Trevor. What is he doing here?

I quickly call Kennedy to my room.

When he arrives, I fill him in. “It was just Trevor out front, without his wife. Why would he be at this hotel a day early and alone?”

“Do you think it’s possible he’s suspicious of my relationship with Brinn? He was acting strange at the retirement party, but that’s Trevor, I didn’t think much of it. Do you think he’s spying on me?”

“No. That’s over the top, even for him,” Kennedy replies.

I ignore his insight. “That’s got to be it. He’s afraid now that I have a fiancée.”

“Fake fiancée.”

I tsk at his interruption. “Now that I have a fiancée, which he can’t confirm is fake, he’s paranoid grandfather will hand over the company to me.”

I can feel the anger beginning to boil within me. My chest tightens. My muscles tense. There is a pounding in my head as my blood pressure rises.

Kennedy looks at me, concern in his eyes.

I grab my suitcase and head to the door. "Where are you going?" Kennedy asks.

"To stay with Brinn. If I want things to look real, it’s the only way."

"Are you certain she will be ok with that?"

"She has to be. It’s a small hotel. We’re bound to run into him.”

I leave the room and walk a few doors down to Brinn’s room. The hallway is clear. There are only two floors, and thankfully Trevor is not on this one right now. I have to get in before he shows up. I drop my suitcase and knock on the door, resting my weight on my cane.

Footsteps grow louder. The door opens, and Brinn stands at the entrance, still wearing my overcoat. She looks adorable in it. It’s almost comical how big it is on her.

She twirls. "What do you think?"

"I think you need a good tailor."

She rests on the door frame, smiling up at me. "What are you doing here?"

I enter the room without permission, dragging my suitcase behind me. She taps me on the shoulder, palms to the ceiling.

"Care to explain what's happening?"

"Trevor’s happening."

"Your cousin?"

"Yeah. I think he’s spying on us."

"Why?"

"He must not believe our relationship is real, so he’s here to catch us in the lie and report back to the family. He wants to make sure the company goes to him."

"I disliked him from the moment we met, and I don’t dislike many people.”

I raise my hand for a high five. She smacks it!

I wag my finger at her. “You’ve got a good head on your shoulders, Brinn Parker.”
