“I’m sorry.” I brush my thumb over her cheek. “For all of it. I’m so sorry.”
“I’m—”
I shake my head and move my hands so they’re cupping her cheeks. “I’m an idiot. I should have just listened.” Another tear trails down her cheek, and it pierces through my chest. “I’ve been here pacing, trying to decide whether I should call you or try and find where you’re staying.” I catch a tear with my thumb and brush it away. “No, please stop crying. I’m sorry. I promise I’ll listen. You were right.”
She presses her lips together and sniffs again. Those bright eyes are full of so much emotion.
Then she opens her mouth and says the last thing I’d expect her to say.
“I missed you, Luke.”
I missed you.
Heavy air fills my lungs. “I fucking missed you too, Princess.”
She clutches at my forearms and stretches up as I lean down. And for the first time in weeks, I kiss my wife.
Chapter 84
Natalie
I knowwe have to talk.
I know nothing has changed.
But in this very moment, I don’t care.
It’s been a long, horrible day, and I want to feel good.
It feels like it’s been forever since I’ve felt good.
Luke slides his hands down the sides of my neck as he plunges his tongue into my mouth.
And I let him in. I open wider.
It shouldn’t feel so right.
Heshouldn’t feel so right.
Not after these last couple of weeks.
But still.
“Luke.” I cling to his arms with my oversized paws. Needing the balance. Needing it to come from him.
“My pretty girl.” Luke’s lips never leave mine. “My fearless wife.”
When he starts to walk backward through the doorway, I pull my mouth away from his.
“My clothes.” I point to the floor and the bundle I dropped.
Luke lets go of me just long enough to pick up the pile, and I look past him to see we’re at the entrance to the locker room.
Luke steps back in front of me. “Hang on.”
He wraps his arms around my waist, and I reach my arms up around his neck. And when he lifts me, I hang on.
I bend my knees, keeping my skates off the ground, as his mouth finds mine again.
