When I’m waved forward,I take my place on the carpet and smile. Trying to place my hands just right. Trying to turn my body in the most flattering way. Trying to look calm and comfortable.

Then the flashes intensify, and I see the cameras shift.

The people around me murmur. And I hear someone say, “It’s him.”

I blink against the brightness and turn my head.

Dots of light dance in my vision, but there’s no mistaking what I’m seeing.

Luke.

My hockey player.

My husband.

Jogging up the sidewalk. Cutting in front of the other people waiting in line behind me.

I can feel the shift inside me as the smile on my mouth changes into something real.

Luke slows as he reaches me. “Hey, Green Eyes.”

My gaze darts down to his pocket square. The only spot of color between us, aside from our pink rings. And I want to press my palm over my beating heart.

He just doesn’t miss.

“I thought you were going to be late.” I keep my tone as casual as I’m able.

Luke smirks. “I thought so too. Then I remembered how much I like the drama of making an entrance.”

I tip my head toward the photographers. “I think they approve.”

Luke reaches his tattooed hand up and cups the back of my neck. “How do you feel about making even more of a scene?”

I part my lips to ask him…

But I don’t get the question out. Because Luke drops his mouth to mine.

My eyes close on their own.

My hands reach for him on their own.

And that damn bird inside my chest starts tearing more bits off my heart, pressing them against my ribs, like she can push them from my body and straight into his.

I squeeze my eyes tighter.

I grip his lapels harder.

And I pretend he’s kissing me like this because he’s falling for me, like I’m falling for him. And not because he’s making a show for the cameras.

Chapter 106

Luke

Someone whistles, and I force myself to break the kiss.

I didn’t mean to get so carried away.
