Both teams are fighting to get shots on goal, just like both teams are being aggressive with the defense.

I take another swallow.

“You spot your girl yet?” Jackson asks me as we push out onto the ice, ready to start the final period.

“Not yet.” I’m not embarrassed about telling him she was coming. I’ve known Jackson forever. We don’t really have secrets.

He turns so he’s skating backward. “Give her something to scream about, yeah?”

I grin.

Oh, I’ll give Green Eyes something to scream about.

Jackson squares up for the puck drop, and I take my place off to his right.

The whistle blows.

The puck drops.

Jackson hits it to me.

Control.

I move toward the boards, taking the puck closer to Vegas’s net.

Breathe.

Vegas players are on top of me.

Zach passes close behind.

I snap the puck to him.

Zach grabs the pass. He fakes to the right, executes a spin, and passes the puck off to Jackson on the far side.

The Vegas players swarm him.

And I’m left open.

My blades slice across the ice as I close in on the goal, mirroring Jackson’s position.

He lifts his stick. Vegas moves to intercept his shot. Jackson adjusts his grip as his stick lowers, and he shoots the puck across the ice to me.

Vegas isn’t ready.

But I am.

Vegas bodies are turning my way, following the trajectory of the puck. But it’s too late for them.

I’m already swinging my stick, anticipating.

My body is still moving, my skates pulling me closer to the goalie.

He shifts.

But I connect with the puck. And I send it flying over his shoulder and into the net.

The crowd isn’t like it would be at home.
