‘I’ve a vague memory about a Polish misper.’

‘I meant about Hardie doing deals with you lot.’

‘Not a dicky bird,’ said Max, feeling his face redden.

‘Would that be normal?’

‘Maybe, maybe not.’ Max’s mind began to whirl. As the person at the forefront of bringing the Hardie family down, he hadn’t been consulted and that seemed strange.

‘Obviously, I’m trying to knit a complete picture together from incomplete intelligence, but his lawyer went to the prison early today, together with two cops whom he’d arranged to meet and get in the jail covertly. DS Lenny Maxwell and DC Ann Laithwaite, you know them?’

‘Covert Source Management team. I know of them; they have a good reputation.’

‘Wakefield and Hamilton organised it a couple of days ago.’

Max just shrugged.

‘Well, as it was a face-to-face meeting, and they wouldn’t have phones in the jail, I’ve no idea what’s said, but I may have heard a call between the lawyer and the senior cop.’

Max raised his eyebrows but still said nothing, the name Miles Wakefield swirling in his mind.

‘Well, it seems to me that Davie is offering chapter and verse on this old murder for an easier ride in jail, and early parole.’ Bruce sipped at his coffee, but kept his eyes locked on Max’s as he drank.

‘Shit.’

‘My sentiments exactly. I don’t buy it for a second, do you?’

‘No. No way would a Hardie grass. It’s in their DNA that you never help the police. Ever.’

‘I’d say he’s planning something.’

‘Any suggestions on the phone calls that Hamilton is in on it?’

‘Nothing.’

‘So, all we have is our inbuilt mistrust of Hardie,’ said Max.

‘Basically, yes. Can you do anything about it?’

‘I can ask, but if we’ve not heard anything, I’d say that we’re being excluded for a reason.’

‘You’ll try, though?’

‘Damn right, I will.’

‘I know I don’t need to say this, Max, but you can’t mention my name at all. We’re both breaking a shitload of laws, me by these illegal intercepts, and you taking the intelligence and not arresting me, right?’

‘I know. I know, thanks for the heads-up, Bruce. Are you heading straight off?’

‘Aye, in fact I need to go and check in again. Plane leaves imminently, well, as soon as I get back on board, anyway.’

‘So, you came here just to see me?’

‘Just a minor diversion, pal. Now, do something about this, Max. If Hardie gets out, I’m not just gonna let it lie, you know that, right? He’s part of the reason my brother ended up dead, and if they got a chance, they’d kill me.’

‘What about the cops?’

‘What, you’re hardly in a position to grass me up, are you?’
