Subject: Re: David Hardie – Debrief and immunity exploratory exercise

Hi Louise,

Thanks so much for your prompt action on this.

Agree with all your points, of course with the caveat of the principle of habeas corpus. No body, no case.

I look forward to hearing the results of the scoping exercise, but I see no problems. Hardie would possibly be eligible for parole in another few years anyway, and moving him to Castle Huntly will be a simple process. I’m actually surprised that he isn’t asking for more!

Any immunity deal will inevitably have to be signed off by the Lord Advocate, but I foresee no problems if Hardie is true to his word.

Maybe lunch soon?

Warm regards,

Finn

Campbell smiled at the overly familiar reply from Finn Townsend, which almost had a suggestion of flirting in it and actually made her chuckle. Typical man, thinking with his dick after just a short meeting. She knew how to manipulate men, and she knew that she possessed more ability in her well-manicured little finger than half of the boys-club senior officers. She was destined for the top, she had always known it, and this could be the next step on the ladder to her ultimate aim.

She sat back in her chair, and smiled. By the time Macdonald was back, they might even have people arrested, and a big media splash ready to go.

Police Scotland being the second biggest force in the UK wasn’t the only reason she’d taken this role as DCC. She knew that Chris Macdonald’s initial contract date was looming. A few big splashes like this, and she’d be in prime position to sweep in.

Chief Constable Louise Campbell had a nice ring to it.

DAVIE HARDIE WASsitting on his bed, looking at, but not seeing, the television which was showing some kind of antiques challenge, when there was a tap at the slightly ajar door.

‘Yeah?’ he said not looking from the TV.

A prison officer pushed the door open; he was a small and wiry man whom Davie hadn’t seen before.

‘Hardie?’

‘Aye.’

‘My name’s Mr Dixon from prison security. Your hospital appointment has been confirmed for tomorrow morning at Queen Elizabeth. You’ll be collected at ten so be ready to move, okay?’

‘I’ll be ready, guv.’

Dixon nodded, turned on his heel and left the cell without another word. This was often the case with the security screws at the nick. They kept out of the way a lot of the time, but when they came, it signalled something was going to happen.

Davie smiled to himself, before standing up to follow in Dixon’s footsteps. He went out onto the metalled landing and descended the staircase before heading for the line of phones. One of the younger inmates was deep in conversation on the middle of the three phones as Davie walked up and pressed his hand down on the cradle.

‘Hey, for fuck’s—’ He stopped, his face twisted with anger, but his eyes widened, and the angry look turned to one of contrition when he saw who it was who had cut off his call.

‘I’ll be one minute, piss off,’ Davie said, entering Mikey’s code, and then dialling. He listened to the dial tone, followed by the pause as the recorded message was played.

‘Yes?’ The same flat voice as before.

‘Tomorrow, leaving at ten. To the White Loch, and then on to Kilmarnock cop shop for interview,’ he said, trying to hide the smile he felt spreading across his face.

‘Understood.’ There was a click as the call was disconnected.
