Ace: Where for handover.

D: I’ll send location when funds received.

‘NOW THEN. THEsoft lad’s only gone and bought it,’ said Barney after he’d read the messages out from his laptop.

‘Needs the funds transferred, that proves intent, and hopefully gives us an account to work on.’ Max looked at the display on his phone, which had just buzzed. A message from Katie.

2pm tomorrow. Don’t forget :-)

He tapped out a reply,as if.‘Pick up the pace, Janie. We need to get this done.’

‘Are you going to write the tickets off, sarge?’ said Janie, mashing down on the accelerator, and switching on the siren and blue lights that were concealed within the radiator grille.

‘Not if you call me sarge again. We need to be in Edinburgh quick as we can.’

‘What’s the rush?’ said Janie as she expertly overtook a long line of cars, all of whom had been abiding by the speed-camera-enforced limit of sixty miles per hour.

‘Let’s say there’s somewhere I need to be at a particular time tomorrow.’

‘Do tell?’ she said as she dived back into the correct lane, and smoothly pushed the car over a hundred, her voice never deviating from calm and collected. This was Janie at her happiest. Driving the big car at big speeds with immunity from prosecution.

‘Never mind. Tell you another day.’ His phone buzzed again; itwas Norma.Hitting cell tower in Portobello. No other calls in or out. Been there all night. ‘Looks like he’s Portobello way, keep up the pace.’

‘Blimey, he’s not buggering about,’ Barney said from the back. ‘Fifty grand’s landed in the account I just opened. I’m forwarding the sending bank account details straight to Norma. He really must want that kompromat back. What now?’

‘Just reply to him on WhatsApp. Funds received, standby for dead drop location.’

‘On it. What time?’ said Barney, tapping away.

Max looked at his watch. It was just after 9 a.m. Plenty of time. ‘Let’s make the bugger sweat. If he asks what time, just say. “Await instructions.”’

‘On it like a car bonnet, lad.’

‘Shall I keep this breakneck speed up?’ said Janie, hopefully.

‘You want to keep driving like this?’

‘Damn straight I do. I want this job done.’

‘Then crack on.’

D: 55.95171838347938, -3.1663923174757547.

Ace: What’s that mean?

D: Coordinates. Copy into Google Maps and it’ll take you to kompromat. Bottom right of sign, taped to rear. It’s there now, so I’d hurry up before someone else finds it. You wouldn’t want that.

Ace: Leaving now. Will I see you there?

D: No. We’ll watch the well from a distance for thirty minutes, then we’re off, I’d make it quick in case anyone saw us put it there. After that I’m gone.

The Ace copied the numbers from the message and pasted them into Google Maps. He smiled; the location was familiar. In fact, it was very familiar. A twenty-minute walk, or a five-minute drive. The sun pierced a shaft of light through the window, bathing the room in a pleasant warmth.

It’d be a nice walk at this time of day, and the park would be quiet.
