‘So, at the house then?’ said Janie.
‘Probably, but the house was sold after the asset confiscation. Sold by court order after all Tam’s cash was seized. Most of it went back to the Crown. Fucking shame, eh?’ He smiled, but then paused and opened his mouth, realisation arriving like a truck.
Max paused as it hit. ‘If the safe was well hidden by your pa, and was then cleared by Tam’s wife before selling, would she have known where it was?’
‘Doubt it. She stayed well out of all the business and was mostly in Cyprus.’
‘So, the safe could still be in the house?’ Janie’s eyes flared open.
‘I guess it may be. But you’ve a problem there.’
‘Why?’ said Max.
‘You know who bought the place, right?’ said Frankie, amusement twinkling in his eyes.
‘No, I’d moved onto the next case, asset confiscation dealt with all that.’
‘The house was bought by Angus McCall.’
Max suddenly felt nauseous. ‘What, Angus McCall, major international money launderer, financier and a close associate of most of the big crime gangs across the UK?’
‘Aye, apart from us, of course. We didn’t get on, which is why we think he bought the house. Just to annoy Tam Junior.’
Max and Janie stared at each other. ‘It could be in that house, right now,’ said Janie.
Max picked up his phone and dialled.
‘How you getting on?’ said Ross.
‘I think the kompromat is at Hardie’s old house in Glasgow.’
‘What?’
‘Aye, exactly. Look, time is tight, where’s Barney?’
‘At his free flat, probably with the tumble drier and dishwasher on.’
‘Okay, we’re heading back to the office. The place is now owned by Angus McCall, so we need to know exactly where he is right now.’
‘What,theAngus McCall?’ Ross sounded incredulous.
‘The very same. We need to know exactly where he is, and who’s in the house right now. Also get Norma to link into the financial teams that investigated the Hardies, they’ll have six years’ worth of accounts on file. They need to search for anything to do with security, or having a safe installed. We also need a blueprint for the place, including all the services, it’s a new place so they’ll be with the planning department.’
‘Right, I’ll sort out a warrant from the on-call Justice of the Peace.’
‘Yeah, we’ll need it, but we also need to box clever.’
‘Go on.’
‘What if it leaks?’
‘Shit. You’re right, Angus McCall has fingers in many bloody pies, more so than Hardie did. It leaks, we’ll be met by an army of lawyers who’ll frustrate the hell out of the process. We’ll need to plan for that.’
‘I’ve an idea, we can talk it through when we get back, but what I really need is the details of the safe. We need where, and what type.’
‘Norma’s on it now. What’s Townsend saying?’
