A few minutes later, Kat walks up, having completed some sort of procedure as she is removing a disposable yellow gown.

“Kat. If possible, can we go together on the next one? Jess has led me to believe the situation may be a little complicated. I just want to make sure we get all the information on the first go, so she doesn’t withhold details because she’s tired of repeating her story.”

“Uh oh. Why does this sound ominous?”

“I’m going to let you go in blind on this one.” I laugh.

“Great. Okay, I’m ready if you are.”

I trail behind Kat, who knocks on the door and awaits an invitation to enter. When none comes, she looks at me, puzzled, and knocks again before cracking the door open. Maybe the patient got too embarrassed to stay and walked out.

As I follow Katarina into the exam room, we find the patient asleep on the bed. Kat gives her a slight tap on the arm and lowers her voice as she attempts to wake her.

The patient jolts awake, wiping the spittle from her mouth.Jeez. She must have been out cold. That was fast. “Sorry. I had a long night.”

Uh, oh. What does that mean?

“Hi there. My name is Kat, I’ll be the physician assistant taking care of you today. And this is Jillian, your nurse. What brings you to the emergency department today?”

The patient adjusts herself on the bed as if she’s about to hit us with a doozy. “So, I hooked up with someone new last night. I guess I’m not cut out for his kind of kink. He tied my arms behind my back while we were doing it. I didn’t mind it. To behonest, I loved it. Maybe too much. I probably should’ve asked him to untie me after the first or second time I got off.”

I swallow hard. Instead of focusing on how crazy this story is, I can’t help but picture Luca doing the exact same thing. He’s such a hot, overly sexual man compared to any other I’ve known.

“I think I was in the post orgasm haze, you know? I just couldn’t get my mouth to work, it was so hot.”

My eyes flick to Kat, hoping I can keep from blushing. This girl is spilling the tea like a whore in church. And what’s more, she’s sharing the more private details about her one-night-stand as if describing paint swatches. Kat is as cool as a cucumber, examining her wrists and upper arms as if this kind of thing happens all the time.

“I think you just had too much pressure on your joints. A little anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen, some ice, and gentle stretching should help. But you might want to loosen the restraints a little in the future.”

“Oh, he was a one-time ride. I’m getting married soon. I just needed to make sure before I was locked in.”

Jeez. And I’d just managed to control my facial expression with the whole arms tied up part of the story. What do you say to that? Congratulations?

Kat must have the same thought because she actually congratulates her before walking to the door.

As we exit into the hallway, we hear her behind us, “Thank you. It was hot, but I got the better brother.”

My eyes lock with Kat’s and my mouth falls open. Once Kat has printed her discharge papers, and the patient turns the corner to the exit, Kat breaks out laughing. “You can’t make this shit up.”

Jess pokes her head out of the triage room, sees us, and comes flying down the hall just as Meghan reports to work. “Oh, please, please, share.” Jess bounces from foot to foot. “I’mtechnically part of her care team. It’s educational. So, I know what to ask the next person who comes in with her complaint.” She laughs.

“I still can’t wrap my head around it,” Kat says. She shares the story with Jess, telling her she need not fear as she triaged her appropriately while wearing a big smirk.

“Man, I’d settle for vanilla sex with a hot guy. And she gets hot and hotter brothers,” Meghan jokes sarcastically. “My dating life is so bad I have to live vicariously through Jess.”

Jessica smacks her on the arm. “Don’t blame me because you’re still hung up on your first love.” She looks at her friend, who immediately rolls her eyes. “A tale as old as time. Like something out of a romance book. The girl falls for her hot, all-star jock, high school best friend who breaks her heart when he leaves town.”

“Don’t bother with that book. It’s a downer,” Meghan says.

My heart clenches, hearing Jessica tease Meghan this way. But I know it’s all in love. Those two are so close. She’d never intentionally hurt her.

Kat wraps her arm around Meghan. “Your day is coming. Trust me, it’ll be worth the wait.”

An hour later, after discharging my patients and handing the area over to Meghan, I gather my things to head for home.

“Hey, Jillian. How are things going with you know who?” she asks.

“Oh, I don’t know.” I can feel my cheeks heat. “We’ve crossed the line past platonic, but I’m not sure what we are now. He doesn’t seem interested in more, and I shouldn’t. Betweensomeone who’s resistant to commit and my history with Dillon, this feels like a really bad idea.”
