I feel a sharp pinch along the inside of my thigh and have to bite down on my lip to keep from making any noise. Standing to my full height, I give him a playful glare. He responds with an expression I can’t discern. It’s giving off a mixture of ‘try me’ and ‘paybacks are hell’ vibes.

“Wouldyoulike some coffee, Luca?” My mother asks, giving me a stern look as if to ask, ‘where’s your manners, Jilly.’ All of this body language interpretation is making my head hurt. I take an overexaggerated slurp of my coffee in response to her goading.

“Yes, ma’am. I’d love a cup.”

She puts her mug down on the counter and points to the cabinet door by the refrigerator. “Just grab a mug off of the top shelf in there.”

Luca turns to face the cabinet, and I pretend to reach past him, placing my hand on his ass where Mom can’t see. I give it a teasing squeeze and feel him flex the hard muscle in my hand. My thighs tighten, and I have to consider this game could backfire.

Luca brings the mug down and reads it aloud, “Santa’s favorite Ho.” He rotates to face me. “It’s nice he made this for you.”

My mother cackles behind me.Traitor. I can see whose side she’s on.

“Well, since Mom’s the one that buys those things, I suspect he was referring to her.”

He shakes his head. “Tsk, tsk, tsk. I’ve never met a sweeter woman.”

“Gammy, look at me and Tru,” Caleb yells from the great room. He’s holding Truitt’s little hands over his head, trying to get him to take a step.

My mother turns to face them, and I use the opportunity to reach over and cup Luca’s balls. “That’s it, Caleb. It won’t be long now.”

“See, what did I say?” Luca whispers in my ear, his warm breath on my delicate skin is like an aphrodisiac. “I know a naughty girl when I see one.”

My eyes flick up to find my mother staring at us. Thankfully, my hand is no longer on his crotch. Yet, I suspect she’s still got our number.

All of a sudden, Caleb races by, and I fly forward, leaning over the marble island to ensure he isn’t dragging Truitt along with him. “Come on, Tru. You can do it. See how much fun it is to walk.”

“That’s not walking, Caleb,” Mom says.

“What did you have for breakfast, Tarzan. You’re all revved up.” Luca chuckles.

“Waffles! With chocolate chips and whipped cream.”

“I see. We might have to make you run a few laps to burn some of that off.”

“Gammy said she was going to take us to the pool later.”

“Look at Turtle trying to be a big boy.” Luca squats down next to where he’s pulled himself up by the couch. “It’s going to happen any day now, right, Tartanuga?” Luca tickles him and Truitt lets out a squeal before babbling a lot of nonsense. While he hasn’t said Mama, he’s getting closer to uttering noises that sound like they could be something. “Does Truitt like to swim, Myla?”

She nods vigorously.

“You do too, yes?”

She again nods with a big smile.

Hell, don’t let this man offer to go to the pool with them. I don’t think I could handle him in nothing but swim trunks yet. I nearly melt into a puddle at the sight of his tattoos trying to escape from the collar of his shirt. If most of his body is on public display, I’ll look like I have heat stroke.

As if Caleb’s read my mind, he stops racing around the kitchen once he spots Luca with Truitt. “Are you coming to the pool, Luca?”

Luca starts to answer, but my mother quickly cuts him off. “No, Caleb. Luca didn’t bring his suit. He needs to take care of your mother.”

What the hell?

Luca could pop teeth out, he’s grinning so hard.

Caleb tilts his head like he’s certain he heard his Gammy wrong.

“She meant take care of somethingforyour mother, Caleb.” I correct.
