No matter how things were between us, I wanted him to know what we shared meant something to me. It literally inspired the centerpiece of my collection.

A slight pang of worry crept in as I made my way onto the lift and pressed the button for his floor.

Would I allow my feelings for him to overshadow everything wrong in our relationship?

He’d opened the doorway to my heart, and no matter how much I wanted to seal it closed, my love for him kept it open.

I blew out a deep breath.

Stop getting in your head and focus. Invite him to the show, leave, and no matter what, do not touch him. Your libido is not in charge of your body.

When the lift doors opened, I couldn’t help but take in the incredible, unobstructed views of the city before me.

As an architect, Damon Pierce knew what he was doing. And with his office, he wanted to garner a reaction from when someone stepped on his floor.

I moved toward the floor-to-ceiling window, thinking back to all the times I’d taken the same view from the balcony a few stories above this very spot. I’d lived in a beautiful cage, but it was a cage. My freedom, life, and future were all on the line.

Nothing lingered over my head, but I still wasn’t free.

Maybe once I launched my collection, I’d feel settled.

Taking the path around the elevators, I reached reception.

Ray, the front office clerk, recognized me and motioned with a hand to go through.

When I reached Damon’s area of the building, I saw the walls making up his office weren’t clear as he usually kept them during work hours, but they were tinted, and the lights were off.

That was odd. Was he out of the office today?

When I approached his assistants, Amanda and Taylor, I noticed they were preparing to leave for the day.

Taylor saw me approaching, and a slightly confused expression crossed his face. “Didn’t Mr. Pierce contact you?”

“Why would he contact me?” I asked, stopping in front of him.

“To tell you about his grandfather.”

His grandfather? All he’d ever spoken to me about was his siblings and mother. And also the fact he’d despised his father.

“What happened to him?”

“He passed away. A heart attack. I’m sure Mr. Pierce can give you the details.”

I nodded, not knowing what else to do.

“When did he leave?”

“Yesterday.”

“Thank you. I’ll get in contact with him.”

This made no sense. Damon had a living grandfather? Why hadn’t he ever told me?

Was everything I knew about him a lie? Was the man I loved a figment of my imagination? Could I truly know a man who kept so much from me?

Without a second thought, I turned and went to Damon’s private elevator, punched in the security code, then stepped inside.

As the lift ascended, I couldn’t understand why he would keep this to himself.
