Her energy almost felt approachable and open, which, for some reason, frightened the fuck out of me.

The woman before me wasn’t the mother I knew or understood.

She remained quiet for a few more heartbeats as if gathering her thoughts before she said, “I always wondered what kind of man you’d bring home. Damon Pierce wasn’t anything in the vicinity of what I imagined.”

“What did you expect?”

“Someone more,” she paused, her lips curving at the corners. “Eccentric.”

I lifted a brow. “Eccentric?”

“You must admit, the people in your circle have interesting reputations.”

“True.” I grinned back at her. “You do know, Damon isn’t normal by any means? And I’m positive the rumors about him have reached your ears.”

She nodded. “I’ve heard things.”

“Doesn’t it bother you?”

“I’m more interested in whether or not it bothers you.”

“It doesn’t.”

“Then I don’t care either.”

Who was this woman, and where had the aliens put my mother? Why was she being pleasant?

This couldn’t be real. Damon must have burned all my brain cells away with his orgasms.

“Do you plan to marry him?”

No was on the tip of my tongue.

Instead of saying that, I responded with, “I can’t answer that unless he asks.”

“And if he asks?”

I looked away, took a steadying breath, and then decided to give her the truth. “I don’t know. I never planned to marry anyone. I promised myself never to fall into a marriage like the one you have with Dad.”

Shit. Maybe I shouldn’t have been so blunt.

Instead of annoyance or hurt on her face, she nodded as if accepting what I had to say.

“Do you hate me, Sophia?”

Without hesitation, I answered, “No, Mom. But I don’t understand you.”

“What is it you don’t understand? I’ll answer any question you have.”

I sat there, not sure if this was a trick. Then, I glanced around, noticing we were the only ones on the terrace outside of Mom’s personal security team.

Well, she opened the door. I was going to step through it.

“Why did you put up with all of the things you did? Why did you let him use you and do those things to you?”

Mom shook her head as if to deny what I was saying, and I lifted my hand to keep her quiet. Nope, she wanted to go here. We were going.

“I know what I heard and saw from my room next to the library. It wasn’t my imagination. I didn’t make it up. All of it happened.”
