“Wouldn’t you do everything possible to ensure they were safe in this situation?”

Her face dropped in resignation, and she pointed to a location over my shoulder. “There is a pathway along the right side of the building. It will lead you around the back and away from the location of the fire. Please be careful.”

“Thank you.” I hugged her and sprinted in the direction she said to follow.

Even with the acidic mix of wood and plastic, and God knew what scents of the various burned building materials filled the air, this side of the massive club seemed safer than where I’d just left. At least for now, anyway.

As the crackling of wood splintering and the roaring of the fire continued, I navigated the zigzag walkway.

Once I reached the maintenance side of the club, I paused, realizing this was where the employees parked and how another world existed back here. The glitz and glamour of Violent Delights were all in front, but this took me behind the scenes.

Five dumpsters with distinct labels sat on the far end of a brick wall enclosure, and there was at least a fifty-foot gap between where the parking area started and the building. That could be where the trucks came in with all the deliveries of supplies.

I followed the roof line as something in my gut told me Lizzy’s instinct would be to go higher if trapped in any building.

She was a Morelli woman.

She wasn’t one to wait for rescue.

In the distance, a handful of people were in the area Milly described as the section designated as the costume room.

Please, Lizzy, be among that group.

Nausea churned in my belly as a pang of fear filled my mind.

What would I do if she wasn’t there? How would I explain this?

Guilt washed over me. I shouldn’t have left Lizzy.

I had to find her. I was responsible for her. It was because of me that she came here.

I knew this wasn’t the place for her from the beginning. Why hadn’t I made her understand she wasn’t ready? I’d thrown her into the deep end instead of easing her into the world of kink.

My lips trembled as logic seeped in.

No one could have stopped Lizzy if she set her mind to something.

If I’d turned her down, she would have gone to Lucian. More than likely, he would have said to come back when she was older, which meant she’d find another, more dangerous avenue to explore the lifestyle.

Sirens wailed in the distance, warning of the fire department’s impending arrival. At the same time, another blast cracked through the building, and fire shot into the air.

Jesus. Could a gas main have exploded?

That was when I heard, “Sophia. Sophia. Is that you? Over here.”

“Lizzy?” I looked in the direction where I saw the people on the roof.

I charged over, my heart beating into my ears.

I called out again, this time at the top of my lungs, “Lizzy, over here. It’s Sophia.”

As I neared, I noticed someone holding an injured woman against their shoulder and Lizzy and Foster waving me toward them.

“Oh my God, Sophia. You have no idea how happy I am to see you.” Lizzy’s hoarse voice told me either her throat was raw from screaming or smoke. “The ladder collapsed just as we pulled Tammy up here.”

That must be the girl who couldn’t put any weight on her foot.

I scanned near her, trying to find any flat area where maintenance would use to access equipment. “We have to get you down. I’m not sure if the roof is safe. Do you see any utility stairwells?”
