“No more talking. We have to move.”

“I can’t move any faster. Only one working leg, remember?” Anderson’s voice had my worry ratcheting up.

“Okay, we can do this. We are going to try to carry you down. You hang on to us and lift both legs. Don’t help. This whole experience won’t be comfortable, but it’s better than the alternative.”

“I hear you.” Anderson closed his eyes as if in agony, and I glanced down at his foot, seeing the angle wasn’t quite right.

“Ready,” I asked.

They all nodded.

Just as we shifted to move, Damon rushed up the stairs. “Sophia, are you out of your mind?”

Seeing him almost brought tears to my eyes. He made it out of the building. He was safe.

No, he came back in for me.

“Damon, what are you doing here?”

“That’s the question I need to ask you. You were supposed to stay where I left you.”

Where he left me? I glared at him.

“Can we do this later? We’re busy at the moment?” Lizzy shifted her body, ready to lift Anderson.” We need to get Anderson out of here.”

“Let me take him.” He pushed Lizzy and me out of the way. “The two of you get outside. Foster and I will bring Anderson down.”

“We all stay together.” He would not send me away.

“For God’s sake, listen to me.” Damon’s exasperation annoyed the hell out of me.

“You don’t get to take over just because you’re here now.”

“Have it your way.” He nodded in Foster’s direction, and they rose together, lifting Anderson with a hand under the shoulders and behind the knee.

As we all rushed down the stairs, Anderson observed, “You aren’t like any submissive I’ve ever encountered. I’m not sure how to label you.”

“You don’t even know the half of it,” Damon muttered. “She’s a brat on the best of days. Others, I have yet to figure out.”

“Funny.”

We reached the ground level right as a blast shook the building. Drywall and debris fell all around us, and visibility was almost non-existent.

A dim glow down the hall was the only indicator that the exit doors were in that direction. I realized somewhere along the way, I’d dropped my phone.

At this point, it no longer mattered. I had no plans to go back and look for it.

We turned the corner when Clark found us with some of his security team.

“You’re a hardheaded jackass, Pierce. At least wait for backup before charging in.” He motioned with his head for his team to grab Anderson.

“Help. Please Help. I’m stuck in here.” The faint cry sent a chill down my spine, making everyone freeze.

Clark and Damon shared some unsaid communication, nodded, and then ran down the hallway we’d come from.

I tried to follow, but Foster held me back by the waist and then pulled me out into the open night. “Oh, hell no. You are too important to Lizzy and Master Damon.”

I thrashed and pushed against Foster’s hand. The crisp, clean air should have been refreshing after being in the smoke for so long, but everything inside me felt crushed and in pain.
