Her seeing a future with Damon and me meant more than I could have imagined. I fought so hard against everything about her that it felt like I’d finally done something to make her happy. It had nothing to do with her, the family, or the Morelli name.

I licked my lips and said, “It all depends on whether or not you ask me.”

“First, come up here.” He shifted his body and made space for me beside him.

“Why?” My heart jumped into my throat. “Are you going to propose to me in a hospital bed?”

“You won’t know unless you come here.”

I crawled onto the bed beside him and tucked myself against his chest. The heat of him, the feel of him, his mere presence was a comfort that filled my soul to overflowing.

“Now what?”

He brushed his mouth across my temple, letting his lips linger on my skin. I closed my eyes, taking in the scent of him.

There truly was nothing like the contentment of being in his arms. “Will you marry me, Sophia?”

“I wasn’t serious.” I lifted my head. “It was a joke.”

“I wasn’t joking.” He stared at me, emotions burning in his eyes. “You’re the only woman I have ever wanted to marry.”

“Damon,” I whispered, my throat going dry. “You’re serious.”

“Yes. I’m very serious.” He cupped my jaw. “Do you have an answer for me?”

Swallowing, I said, “It depends. Where’s the ring?

“At home, in the safe. I’ve had it for six weeks. Stop stalling and answer the question.”

“You had a ring made for me?” My voice grew high-pitched. “But we weren’t even together. Are you insane?”

He rubbed his thumb across my lower lip. “Answer my question, and I’ll answer all of yours.”

“Yes, I’ll marry you, Damon Pierce.”

CHAPTER TWENTY

Damon

I stared down at Sophia, not believing she agreed to marry me.

Tilting her face up to mine, I leaned down, brushing my lips against hers for a soft kiss before setting my head back on my pillow.

I wasn’t anywhere near recovered from my concussion, so the best I could do was limit movement. However, once I was back in physical shape, this woman had a good, hard punishment coming to her, along with a brutal fucking.

“When did you order this ring for me?”

Of course, she’d caught that one specific bit of information.

“A while ago. It arrived around the time you had your encounter with the makeup artist.”

“But you broke up with me or whatever that hell you put us through with that idiot thing you did in the club.”

I stared up at the ceiling of the hospital room. “I believed my whole life I came from bad blood. My grandfather and father were the worst of human beings. And being of their genetics made me no way near good enough for you.

“The kink aspect of my life wasn’t an issue until Maria. Her suicide changed everything. I decided normal relationships weren’t for me. Single encounters kept things safe and without consequences. But you came along.”

“I do have a habit of messing up people’s plans.” Sophia’s head settled on my chest.
