“Shouldn’t I give them a description now so they can catch the guy?”

“You can rest assured he won’t be able to hurt you or anyone else ever again.” He pinned me with a stare, something dark and dangerous flashing in his eyes.

I didn’t bother asking him to clarify what he meant. I knew. After all, I’d heard the unmistakable sound of a neck being snapped. Saw his lifeless body in a heap on the ground.

Instead of feeling horrified over the idea that this man was able to take a life with the efficiency of a trained killer, it didn’t scare me.

If anything, it made me more curious about who Gideon Saint was. I made a mental note to ask Melanie. If he had as much money as I sensed he did based on the designer suit and Tag Heuer watch on his wrist, she’d probably know something about him.

“Well, thank you. For everything. If you didn’t find me when you did, I?—”

“Don’t.”

His gruff tone caused me to snap my mouth shut.

“Don’t what?”

“Look at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like I’m a hero. I’m not. Far from it.”

“What makes you say that?”

“It’s the truth, Imogene. I’m not a good man. The sooner you realize that, the better off you’ll be.”

“I don’t think?—”

The sound of determined footsteps cut me off. I snapped my head toward the doorway just as Liam barreled inside, wrapping me in his arms.

“I came as soon as Mel called.” His voice was hoarse with worry as he squeezed me tightly, his panic palpable. “Who the hell did this?” He pulled back, but didn’t release me, his grip on my biceps firm. “I want names. Want to make sure this guy rots in prison for the rest of his pathetic life.”

“That won’t be necessary,” Gideon stated in a commanding voice before I had a chance to respond. He stepped toward Liam, his expression hardened and borderline severe. “The problem’s already taken care of.”

“Who are you?” Liam squared his shoulders, narrowing his gaze on Gideon.

Melanie appeared in the doorway, slipping inside and offering me an apologetic look. She didn’t have to say a single word for me to know what she was telling me, that she tried to stop Liam from interrupting.

“Gideon Saint.”

Liam’s gaze widened, and he did a double take. It was obvious he’d heard of him.

“Gideon Saint, as in the CEO of Growth Ventures?” Liam asked.

“The one and the same,” Gideon responded, his demeanor still distant.

“I’ve heard a lot about you.” He extended his hand. “Liam Pierce.”

“I’m aware.” He placed his hand in Liam’s, his jaw clenched.

My eyes darted between the two men, something flickering in Gideon’s stare, as if he struggled to contain his irritation. Or anger. But it was more than that. More than disgust. Almost like hatred.

“Gideon helped me tonight,” I explained, hoping to break through the growing tension in the room.

I half expected Gideon to break every finger in Liam’s hand. Based on what I’d witnessed him do tonight, he was more than capable of doing just that.

And worse.
