Itwasn’tjust sex. Not to me.

Being with Gideon made mefeelagain.

And that scared me more than anything.

“There you are.”

At the sound of the familiar voice, I snapped my head up to see Liam strolling casually toward me.His easy gait and relaxed smile were a stark contrast to the tense energy consuming me.

A knot of unease tightened in my stomach as I tried to compose myself so he wouldn’t pick up on the fact I’d just been fucked harder than I ever had before.

And in his library, no less.

That would have required Liam to be observant, though.

“I was wondering where you’d disappeared to.”

“My feet were killing me so I went to sit down for a minute in the library. Guess I lost track of time. You know how I get around books.”

A low chuckle rumbled from his throat as he kissed my forehead. “That I do.” He lingered a beat longer than I felt comfortable with.

Could he smell Gideon on me? Did he see how flushed my skin was from the heightened state of arousal I was still in?

“Come on,” he said when he finally pulled away. “I’d like one dance with the birthday girl now that your feet have had a rest.”

“Of course.”

Liam guided me down the hallway, his hand heavy against the small of my back. We only made it a few feet before the distinct sound of confident footsteps echoed behind us. I silently cursed under my breath when Liam paused, glancing over his shoulder.

“Mr. Saint.” He turned to face Gideon. “I thought you’d left.”

I reluctantly turned around, as well, my eyes drifting up to meet Gideon’s of their own accord. The instant they locked on his intense gaze, an ache settled low in my belly.

“I’m heading out now. Thank you for your hospitality.”

Liam offered his hand and they shook. “I hope you’ve enjoyed yourself.”

I shifted nervously at the double meaning to his remark. Gideon seemed to find amusement in it, though, the corners of his mouth quirking up slightly.

“More than you can possibly imagine.”

My cheeks heated as a renewed rush of electricity coursed through me. I wished it didn’t. Wished I didn’t feel anything for this man. He brought out feelings in me I didn’t think I’d ever experience again after losing Samuel.

I wasn’t sure how to deal with that.

“Happy birthday, Ms. Prescott.”

He held my gaze for a protracted moment, the seconds seeming to stretch as I stared into his blue eyes. Finally, he pushed past us and disappeared from view.

Gideon

“Did anyone suspect anything?” Henry asked the following morning after I updated him on everything that happened last night at Imogene’s party.

Well,almosteverything.

I left out what happened in the library. Not because I was ashamed. After all, he was fully aware I planned to use Imogene to destroy Liam, even if he’d repeatedly voiced his concerns about getting close to her.
