A few seconds later, the door opened and Willow slipped into the tiny room. The sweet expression she wore in the office was now replaced with a fierce scowl.

“Did you hear that shit?” She crossed her arms in front of her chest.

“Told you he’s a scumbag,” I replied.

“He’s lucky I didn’t snap one of those pudgy fingers when he touched me.”

I stole a glance at Henry, who looked ready to break not just every bone in his hand, but in his entire body.

“In a few days, he’s going to wish the worst of his troubles was a few broken fingers,” I assured her.

“Good.” Willow’s voice was laced with venom.

“You left the papers where he’d see them?”

She gestured toward one of the monitors. I followed her line of sight as Alton leaned over my desk, seemingly focused on one paper in particular.

“Bingo,” Henry remarked when Alton whipped out his phone and began snapping photos of the document.

“That’s my cue.” I rose from my seat, straightening my crisp suit jacket before heading toward the door.

“Good luck,” Willow offered.

“Thanks.”

I stepped into the hallway and closed the heavy wooden door behind me. I had no doubt Alton was already itching to get back to his office with what he uncovered in the papers I’d purposefully left out for him to find.

Little did he know his lack of ethics was about to cost him everything.

And I couldn’t wait.

“Ah, Mr. Sinclair,” I greeted jovially as I entered my office.

Alton whirled around, his eyes widening briefly like a kid who was caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Instead, he was an investment banker caught documenting inside information that he planned to use to his advantage in order to make himself richer.

“Call me Alton,” he instructed as he returned his phone to his pant pocket.

“Sorry to keep you waiting, Alton. Some of the other investors in my venture capital group had some concerns we needed to address.” I approached him and shook his hand.

“Of course. You seem to have your eggs in many baskets, based on some research I’ve done.”

“What can I say?” I skirted around my desk and lowered myself into the chair. “I’m a sucker for an innovative idea. I’ve backed a few misses, but I’m happy to say they’ve been mostly hits.”

“No need to explain to me. I understand it all perfectly. Sometimes you have to take a few risks to reap huge rewards.”

“Exactly.” I leaned back into my chair and tented my fingers in front of me. Then I widened my gaze, pretending to have just noticed the open folder on the desk.

“My apologies.” I gathered the pages and quickly hid them in the file. “I’d asked my assistant to file these before bringing you in.” I rolled my eyes, feigning annoyance. “Apparently, she didn’t understand the instructions.”

“Good help is hard to find these days,” Alton said.

“Yes, it is. But at least she’s nice to look at.” I waggled my brows, playing the part of a chauvinist asshole, much like Alton.

“She’s better than nice. I’m not sure how you get any work done with a little thing like that around.”

“It does take quite a bit of resolve.”
