They’d bought up stock in GeoCom thinking it would soon be acquiring TechAway, the company responsible for revolutionizing smart home systems across the world. While the draft press release Alton had seenwaslegit, as someone who owned fourteen percent of TechAway, I thought it best to make sure it would be a good fit.

On paper, it was.

But when I had Henry put his impeccable hacking skills to use, I learned GeoCom’s executive board had more skeletons in its closet than a graveyard.

It wasn’t my fault Alton failed to read the minutes from the board of directors meeting where we unanimously votednotto accept GeoCom’s offer, that he’d acted on insider information in obvious violation of securities law.

Nor was it my fault that both Liam and James also hoped to use that information to increase their bank accounts.

Regardless, I was going to enjoy every second of watching their carefully constructed house of cards slowly crumble around them. There was nothing they could do to stop it.

Alton’s angry gaze seared into mine, his body tense and coiled like a snake ready to strike. I could see the battle raging within — wanting to release some of his aggression on me, but also knowing he needed to minimize any further damage to his career and reputation.

In just a few days, he wouldn’t have either.

“Come on,” James encouraged, attempting to pull him away.

Finally, Alton released a sigh and shuffled away, James and Liam following close behind. But before Liam disappeared into the elevator, he threw me a heated glare laced with suspicion.

“What was that about?” Alexander asked once everyone returned to their conversations.

Although the conversation now seemed to be about what could have upset easygoing, congenial Alton Sinclair.

“Earlier this week, I met with Alton to discuss him handling a few of my investments. It appears he took a peek at a confidential file and made some insider trades based on the information he gleaned without seeing the full picture. News just broke that, in all likelihood, is about to have a disastrous effect on the stocks I assume he bought.”

Alexander shook his head in disapproval. “It’s about time he finally got caught.”

Yes, it is, I thought to myself.

ChapterTwenty-Nine

Imogene

I checked my reflection in the full-length mirror, hoping the one-shoulder black dress would be adequate for wherever Gideon planned to take me tonight. He hadn’t told me, and I worried I’d be either underdressed or overdressed, so I tried to find something that could go either way. The dress was sexy, landing at my mid-thigh, but the straight cut and flowing material along one sleeve gave it a casual feel, too.

And then there was the big question — whether to wear panties.

I opted for no panties.

It was risqué, but it drove Gideon wild. I did stuff a pair in my purse, just in case.

A knock on the door jolted me out of my fantasy about Gideon sliding his hand between my legs in a busy restaurant.

After one last look at my appearance, I grabbed my purse and opened the door, expecting to see a tall, dark, and handsome man on the other side.

Instead, Liam stood in the hallway, his hair disheveled, his polo shirt untucked from his khaki pants. He was normally calm and collected. Not tonight.

“Where are you going?” he barked in an accusatory tone.

“To dinner.”

“With who? I just bumped into your parents. They said they were staying in tonight.”

“They are.” I held my head high. “I’m going out with Gideon.”

“What’s going on with you two?” he snapped, his hands forming into fists. “Are you letting him fuck you?”

“I’m notlettinghim do anything, Liam. Even if I were, it’s none of your business.”
