“You don’t know that! You don’t know anything about him!” He threw up his hands in frustration.

“I know that he makes me happy. And I know the only reason you’re doing this is because you can’tstandthe idea of another man actually being interested. Or worse. ThatI’dbe interested in someone other than you. But I’mnotinterested in you, Liam. I never have been. We may have slept together, but it was the biggest fucking mistake of my life. One you can be damn sure I’ll never make again. So?—”

The shrill sound of a bell echoed through the hallway, and I clamped my mouth shut as the elevator doors opened and Gideon stepped out. When he saw Liam and me, he hesitated, obviously picking up on the heavy tension.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

“You didn’t.” I pinned Liam with a glare, then hurried into the elevator, Gideon following close behind with a protective hand on my back.

“Ginny…” Liam begged, advancing toward me.

“No, Liam,” I snapped, cutting him off. “There’s no coming back from the things you just said. Not this time.” I continued to glower at him until the door closed between us. Then I exhaled a long breath, falling against the wall.

“Is everything okay?” Gideon asked after a beat.

I swallowed down the lump building in my throat. It wasn’t Liam I was upset with, although I was certainly irritated.

I was more upset with myself for not seeing what Melanie had been trying to tell me for years.

WhatSamuelhad tried to tell me.

Liam would do anything to keep me as his.

It was sad that it took him accusing an innocent man of murder to make me see that.

“This has been building for a while,” I admitted with a sigh. “It was only a matter of time until it blew up.”

“What happened?” Gideon swept his concerned gaze over mine. “He didn’t hurt you, did he?”

The protective edge in his voice flooded my body with warmth, despite my annoyance with Liam.

“Because I swear to god, Imogene. I don’t care if he’s your friend, I’ll?—”

Straightening, I pressed a hand to his chest. “I’m fine,” I assured him. “Long story short, he doesn’t trust you.”

“He probably shouldn’t.” He flashed a devious smile, the heat in his stare cutting through the tension.

“And why’s that?” I playfully waggled my brows.

“Because of all the things I plan to do to you later on.” He looped an arm around my waist and dragged my body against his. “I’ve been making a list all day.”

“Well, then…” I played with a few tufts of hair that fell over the collar of his crisp black suit.

I loved this man in black. There was something about the darkness of his clothes that made the blue in his eyes pop even more.

“Why don’t we go have some dinner so we can get back and see how many things we can cross off that list?” I murmured, brushing my lips against his.

“I like the sound of that.”

ChapterThirty

Imogene

I moved through my hotel room, doing one final check of the space to make sure I hadn’t left anything behind. As luck would have it, I did find a pair of panties when I tossed the sheets. I didn’t think I wore panties enough this weekend to leave a pair in the bed. Especially since most of the time I spent in this bed was with Gideon.

And the things we did definitely didn’t require panties.

After shoving them in my suitcase, I took one last sip of my coffee and was about to toss the cup into the garbage, but paused, my eyes falling on the contents. Particularly the used condom Gideon threw in there this morning.
