“Aww. Are you guys going to get her a fish?” I ask, remembering how quick our fish used to die and how hard we’d cry each time.

“No,” Everly laughs softly. “Ares promised her he would. Kerrigan has all her uncles wrapped around her tiny little fingers.”

Jax opens his eyes and lets out a pained cry. “Shit.” Everly drops the phone, then quickly bends to pick it up. “Gotta go, sissy. Love you.”

“Love you too, Evie. Tell everyone hi for me.”

“Come home and tell them yourself,” she challenges with a smile. “Fine. I’ll tell them.”

Everly ends the call, and tears well in my eyes.

The floor creaks, and I turn to find Ares standing in the door. “I’m not fucking Caitlin.” His voice has an angry edge I’ve never heard from him before.

I wipe my eyes and gingerly jump down off the counter, then adjust the temperature of the shower. “I know.”

“Any reason you lied to your sister?”

“I didn’t lie. My foot is fine. It really hasn’t been bothering me much this week.”

A strange look comes over his face, and I realize that wasn’t what he was talking about as he crowds me, forcing me back, then plants his palms flat against the wall on either side of my face. “Why didn’t you say anything if it was bothering you?”

“Because I’m a professional, and I’m fine.” I cup his scruff-covered jaw in my hands. “I have a very high pain tolerance.” Steam billows out of the shower and wraps around us. “You want to take a shower with me?”

Ares steps back out of my hold. “I’m going to go clean up breakfast.” He kisses my forehead and leaves the room and me in it, wondering what the hell just happened.

Ares

Nixon

Dude. When are you coming home?

Ares

I’m on a red-eye tomorrow night.

Why? You didn’t burn my place down, did you?

Bellamy

Hey. We’re all adults. We can handle a few days without you.

Ares

If you have to announce you’re an adult, I should probably be worried.

Caitlin

No, shithead. Nothing has burned down. Nothing has broken. And only one skank has been thrown out. Your boyfriend just misses you.

Nixon

Don’t be a bitch, Cait. I’m just tired of being outnumbered.

And she wasn’t a skank.

Caitlin

Sure she wasn’t.
