“Too late. We made our bed.”

Yes, but I never thought I’d actually end up sleeping in it with you.

I trundle down the steps two at a time. The dogs are going apeshit. We forgot about them last night. I hope they have water.

The lights in the living room are still on. Because, yeah, that’s where I bent Tuck’s baby sister over the couch and ate her pussy before coming all over her tits.

I can still taste her in my mouth.

Glancing at the door, I see the outline of Tuck’s enormous frame. My stomach drops a hundred stories. He rams his fist into the door. “Open up, Abel, or so help me God?—”

“We’re coming, Tuck. Jesus,” Jen says.

God, this whole thing has been a major, major misstep. The fake marriage. The whole getting-naked-with-her bit.

I am in for a world of pain.

I gently move Jen aside just in time to be the first at the door. I unlatch the deadbolt and then Tuck is shoving his way inside.

“Riley called me when we were on the way home from the hospital earlier,” he says.

My pulse thumps. “And?”

“He said you and Jen eloped. That y’all are married. That’s not true, is it?”

Here it comes. “It is.”

Tuck looks exhausted. Red eyes. Overgrown beard. But that doesn’t stop him from grabbing the front of my shirt, pulling back his arm, and landing a mean right hook on the side of my jaw.

Jenny screams. My vision wavers, a bright burst of pain exploding inside my face.

Holding up my arm in an attempt to ward off another blow, I taste blood.

“Let me explain.” My tongue is thick and unwieldy inside my mouth.

Tuck grabs my arm and shoves me backward. “Anyone but my sister. You can fuck around withanyoneelse?—”

Jenny’s at my side, her hands on my back. “Stop! Stop, please, Tuck, c’mon. I’m begging you, don’t hurt him. Please.”

I drop my arm, holding it out in front of her as a shield. “Get back, Jen. Right now.”

“And you.” Tuck points at his sister. “You know how he is. This had better be a fucking joke.”

My stomach bottoms out at the way his voice goes hoarse. He’s angry, yes.

He’s also scared.

Scared that I’ll pull my usual bullshit and hurt Jen. She’s been disappointed enough.

He thinks I’ll disappoint her again.

It’s different with her, I want to say.I can be different. And I am. But for some reason, I can’t make myself say the words.

“We should have told you,” Jen is saying. “But with the baby coming, we thought it was best to wait.”

Tuck throws back his head and laughs. “Wait? Are you fucking kidding me? Y’all didn’t wait a goddamn day to run off and get married. Y’all weren’t even together.”

“That’s not true.” I gently palm my jaw, moving it side to side. Not broken. “Ask around. We’ve been together.”
