And outside of mine.

Panic overwhelms me. Is Caterina trying to…

“Sorry,” she murmurs. “I just wasn’t sure that you’d really leave them alone unless we made it back here.”

I snort. “What did you think I would do?”

“I don’t know. Bash through the wall like the Kool-Aid man and duel Sal for Gia’s honor.”

“What is this Kool-Aid?” I repeat, confused about the word.

Caterina laughs. “Never mind. It’s not important. But I did think you were going to continue to heavily protest the fact that they’re staying in the same room.”

I shut my eyes. “I do not monitor Gia’s life. Not usually.”

“Well, I’d hope not. For one, your sister is one of the smartest, most lethal people that I’ve ever met.”

“Si, I can agree with that,” I mutter.

“So why do you care who she’s sleeping with?”

I snort. “Normally, I do not. I care so little that I prefer to actually never hear about it, actually.”

She cracks a tiny smile. “Yeah, that sounds right. I don’t want to hear about anything that my brothers do on their leisure time.”

“However, her choice of companions…” I stop.

Of course I don’t trust Caterina’s brother.

But to admit that to her feels like I will be tearing something open between us that has only just begun to knit back together.

She rolls her eyes. “Out of all of my brothers, you should trust Sal.”

“Why is that?” I respond, genuinely interested.

“Sal didn’t have sex until he was in his early twenties. Dino tried to hire escort after escort for him, thinking that he would need to learn,” she puts the word ‘learn’ in air quotations. “But afterthe fifth one went home with a smile on her face and a suspicious amount of money was gone from his account, Dino asked why. Turns out, Sal was paying off their small debts or giving them extra money to just sit in the room while he went to sleep.”

That does earn a smile from me. “Why?”

“He’s never wanted to be with anyone unless they loved each other like our parents did,” she responds softly.

My heart aches at that, because I understand how that feels.

Begrudgingly, I nod. I do not trust any of Caterina’s brothers, but this one seems…

Decent.

“I’m sorry about Dino.”

Her face shutters again. “I can’t believe he would be so careless.”

I did not believe it either.

It was either a very intentional move, or a very stupid one.

The distinction would determine whether Dino lived or died.

“We will get to the bottom of this, Caterina. I promise.”
