At least we have that in common.

“It is Caterina’s decision. I have not exactly earned the title. Not yet.”

“Are you interested in it?”

I grin.

Sal is compelling. He’s still fixing Gia’s coffee, back turned to me, tone casual.

But I do not mistake that for relaxation. He is asking me for my intentions with his sister.

As I had asked him for his intentions with mine.

“Yes,” I say simply. “I hope that someday, I will earn the title.”

“Well, that’s good.”

“I think so,” I respond coolly.

At that moment, the hellion in question explodes into the room. “Uncle Sal!” she shrieks, throwing herself at Sal. He laughs, catching her, showering her in kisses and tickles.

Her giggle is ear-shattering, but it makes my heart squeeze with joy.

And, a tinge of jealousy.

I wish to be the source of so much happiness for my child.

“Zio Sal, did you know that Nonna Francesca can make French toast?”

“Oh, can she?” he looks over at me. “I wonder who taught her to do that?”

“Mommy’s friend,” Luna answers without breaking her stride.

Caterina glides in to the dining room, followed by Gia. “Sorry to send her in unaccompanied. Gia needed some help with a bandage and I offered.”

Instantly, Sal’s nonchalant countenance shifts. He lets Luna down gently and takes swift strides to be at Gia’s side. “What’s wrong? Is something hurting? Do I need to get the doctor?”

“No, you big baby. I just needed Caterina’s help to put a bandage on my side.”

“Oh,” he says like he’s taken aback.

I snort. I know the feeling.

Gia brightens then. “Did you make me coffee?”

“Yes,” Sal hands it to her. She inhales, eyes shut, and smiles. “How did you know how I like it?”

“Elio told me.”

“Oh did he?” Gia’s eyes are laughing and her lips are pursed together in a smile.

I shrug. “I do not wish for anyone to experience you prior to your coffee.”

“You’re worse than I am.”

I lift my cup. “Hence why I woke early, so no one had to suffer my presence before it.”

They all laugh at that.
