“Mommy always times me,” she chirps.

“What?”

“She says whoever can get the most first is the winner. So I am the winner!”

I laugh. “Let us see about that.”

Sweeping the kitchen with Luna is fun. I am not certain how long it takes, but it is certainly less time than I would normally do such a chore. Come to think of it, I do not remember the last time I swept my own kitchen.

When we are done, Luna smiles at me. “Can we eat now?”

“Certainly.” I reach for another box of cereal, and a bowl. Within seconds, Luna and I are munching on our bowls.

Together.

I frown, realizing while this is ideal for the most part, something is missing.

“Luna, where is your mother?”

She shrugs. “I dunno.”

“What do you mean you do not know?”

“I dunno.”

“Did she sleep in your room?”

Luna wrinkles her nose. “Yes. She made me hot and she cried a lot.”

Dio.

Of course she did.

Guilt clutches my throat. “And where is she now?”

“Not here. I wonder if she wants some breakfast?”

“I wonder too, stellina,” I murmur.

“Zio Marco calls me that,” Luna says forlornly. She looks at me. “Can we invite him over?”

“Another time,” I murmur to her. “Stay here, Luna.”

“‘Kay,” she says in response.

I rise, making a note to tell Gia to look after Luna. I do not trust that she’s going to remain in this room. I walk the halls, peering into rooms.

By the time I walk through the last fifteen rooms, it’s clear.

Caterina is nowhere to be found.

I pull out my phone and dial my sister. “Gia,” I snap.

“Is there a reason you left Luna alone in the kitchen?” she growls back.

“She was eating. And I was going to call you.”

“So why the h-e-l-l did you not?” she says, spelling the words.
