Supposedly, Sal has a connection in Italy that will spirit me out of Elio’s clutches once I do give the evidence to Marco.

Sal is the most reliable out of all of my brothers. He’s not hot-headed like Dino or calculating like Marco. He’s a great guy with a big heart, and I trust that he’s going to get me out of there.

I settle in for a long flight. I think that at my last estimate, the flight from New York to Italy was about eight hours, so I should have enough time to rest before I get there.

I’ll be gone within a week. I’m sure of it.

Elio might have thrown me off earlier, but I’m not going to be thrown off now.

I turn my neck and tuck my head into the seat, and I close my eyes.

A while later,I wake with a start. The captain’s voice is hissing over the radio, informing us that we’re descending. I frown and look at my watch.

It’s only been about three hours.

That’s not nearly long enough to be anywhere in Italy.

A knot of nerves pinches in my stomach. Is something wrong? Are we having to make an emergency landing?

In the seat across the aisle, Gia stretches. “Well. That was nice. Did you sleep?”

I fix her with a glare. “Where are we?”

She gives me a wry twist of her lips. “Babe, I’d love to tell you. Elio will kill me though, and sadly he is both my boss and my twin.”

“What do you mean?”

She winks at me. “You’re smart, remember? I’m sure you’ll figure it out real quick.”

The plane lands with a jolt

The panic in my chest pinches tighter.

“Gia, I…”

The other woman’s eyes tighten at the edges. “Listen, Caterina. You seem really nice. I’m not sure what all this is about, but I just… I’ll do what I can. Elio is one mean motherfucker when he wants to be, and I say that as his twin who loves him like another part of my body. I just… I don’t know. Something feels off about this whole thing. You know?”

I frown. “Thank you. I think.”

The door to the plan opens and we both stand. Gia pauses for a minute. “Also, I should say that while Elio is one mean motherfucker, I’m even worse. So if you cross me, or if he’s right and your brother fucked up our parents, you’ll be watching out for me even more than you watch out for him.”

And with that she saunters off of the plane.

I blink.

They think that Marco ordered the hit? But that makes no sense. Our parents were in the car accident after their parents. Why…

“Caterina. Let’s go.”

Gia’s voice summons me off of the plane. Cautiously, I climb down the stairs. Humid air descends on me in a crushing blanket of moisture, and I blink against it, looking around.

I have no idea where we are.

But the thought that makes me sweat, even in the warm night air, is that my brothers don’t know where I am either.

And I have a very, very bad feeling that our whole plan is totally worthless.

Not to mention, of course, that if I’m not in Italy, they have no idea how to find me.
