I sniff.

Quickly I spin. I grab the offending slices of bread, hissing in a breath as I try to turn it over in the pan.

I blink down.

The toasted cheese sandwich is completely blackened.

“Ew!” Luna shrieks, clearly also catching a glimpse of my error. “That is too toasted, it’s nasty!”

Dio.

I have created a sandwich in the ‘nasty’ category, the same as broccoli. I spin back to my child. “I will make another.”

“I’m hungry,” she whines.

“I know. I am trying. Certainly, there’s some trick to this…”

“Well. For one, your heat is up far too high.”

I freeze at Caterina’s voice.

Luna releases a delighted squeal. “Mommy!” She hops from her stool and runs to her mother, who gives her a big hug. “Mommy, can you make me a grilly cheese?”

“Where is Nonna Francesca?”

Luna shrugs. “I dunno. And Mr. Mommy’s Friend made it nasty.”

I feel the urge to hang my head in shame. “I have never made such a thing,” I argue in my defense.

Caterina lingers, staring at me in the doorway to the kitchen. My eyes roam over her beautiful form. She’s wearing casual clothing, some loose linen pants and a cotton shirt, but on her they look elegant.

Everything looks elegant on her.

I turn and stretch my hands out in a gesture of peace. “I have failed. Miserably,” I admit.

Caterina arches an eyebrow. “You don’t say.”

“Please save me. Teach me how to feed this child, so I will never make the error again,” I try.

It is a little outlandish.

But to my great relief, it seems to work.

Caterina smiles, and steps into the kitchen.

“Sure. But only so you can make it for Luna next time,” she says as she brushes past me.

My heart stutters at the word next time.

“I will,” I promise.

I will learn every food that Luna enjoys, and I will make it whenever she wishes.

I swear.
