Elio rises quietly, placing the book on the nightstand. I shut off the light, and we step into the hall.

Together.

Suddenly, the silence between us is awkward.

“Um. Thank you,” I murmur.

“It was a joy,” he says.

I look up.

He’s being honest.

“I think that I’m still a little hungry,” I blurt.

I’m not sure what compels me to say it. My mind is reeling through the moments we’ve just had, and I think I might be interested in continuing them.

I think I want to go back into the kitchen.

And I think I want to spend more time with Elio.

“Oh, are you? I can have Francesca…”

“No, I’ve got it,” I cut him off quickly. “But um. Are you hungry?”

Elio blinks at me.

My heart is hammering in my chest.Come on, Elio. Pick up on the hint.

Understanding dawns in his beautiful grey eyes. “I could eat, I think,” he murmurs.

“Cool. Let’s go see what’s in there.”

Silently, Elio follows me back to the kitchen.

Once we get there, I’m definitely not hungry. I opt for an apple, and start to nibble at it, looking at Elio from across the huge table.

Now that I’m here, doubt is creeping into my mind, and I’m beginning to think that this is not as good of a plan as I originally thought.

What am I doing?

Elio Rossi is my enemy. He’s the head of the Rossi family, my family’s sworn enemy.

And I offered to bring him into the kitchen for a midnight snack, so that I could… what?

Talk to him? Be near him?

Kiss him?

Oh no. No, no, no.

I will not be kissing Elio anytime soon. Heck no.

Instead of thinking about Elio’s smooth lips, I slice my apple into tiny, thin pieces. There’s a noise like crystal clinking, and I look over at Elio, who is pouring a brown liquid into two glasses.

“What’s that?” I can’t help it; I’m curious.

“Amaretto. Some of the best,” he says in a deep, throaty voice.
