“Torture, because I could not make my dreams a reality. I do not like to covet what I cannot have, wife,” he says.

The emphasis on the wordwifeis not lost on me.

“Um…” I can’t think of anything to say.

“I want you. But I do not want a quick fuck in the kitchen. When I have you again, I will feast on your body. I will gorge myself on you, and you will scream my name for hours. I want you, Caterina. But I want all of you, and that’s not something you are ready to give,” Elio breathes.

Then, he’s gone.

He walks over to Luna, who looks like a chipmunk with her cheeks stuffed full of food. He smiles at her, and leans down to sample some of the food.

I am stunned.

I want all of you.

Jesus Christ, I think I’m lying again.

Because he thinks I’m not ready to give all of myself to him.

I am. I’m a traitor to my family, I’m the weakest woman on earth.

I’m more than willing to give all of myself to him.

I’m just terrified of what will happen if I do.

After the buffet at breakfast,Luna’s on a major sugar high. I decide to take her to the pool, where she’s most likely to get out all of her crazies in a somewhat productive fashion.

I don’t know where Elio is.

After breakfast, he meandered away, tapping on his phone like he was being paid by the word. I didn’t ask him what he was doing.

I’m not entirely sure that I wanted to know.

So, shaking off the morning, Luna and I head to the pool. She’s about ten minutes into playing ‘Mommy and Luna mermaids’ with me when she shrieks with delight. “Mommy’s friend!”

I spin.

Elio, looking handsome as ever in his swim shorts, tosses his towel down by the pool. “Cara mia,” he says, beaming at Luna. “How is the water?”

She giggles. “You talk funny.”

“Only for you, cara mia. Now tell me. What are we doing?”

I pretend not to notice when he takes over my role as a mermaid. Instead, I get out and go sit in one of the chairs by the pool.

It isn’t long before Elio joins me, and we watch Luna splash around with the toys that have mysteriously appeared since our last pool excursion.

“Hello, Caterina,” he says softly.

“Um. Hi,” I whisper.

“The sun is quite nice today.”

Oh. We’re doing small talk? How nice.

The problem is that I don’t do small talk.

And, considering our conversation this morning, I have some questions.
