Dammit, no. He didn’t want another chance. Wrong. He shouldn’t want another chance, and he definitely didn’t deserve one anyway.

Find a way.

Jesus. He had to stop thinking those things or he would start thinking they had a chance. And they didn’t. Mostly.

“Earth to Marcus,” Adam said snapping his fingers.

“What?” He turned and found both Adam and Autumn staring at him with curiosity. They were both smiling.

“You want to shoot me the list of your contacts?” he asked.

“Sure, and I can call up an old CI who might know something about the murder.”

“Thanks. You might want to shoot that info to TJ as well.”

Adam nodded, still smiling.

“What?”

“I just think you both have issues still.”

Issues? That sounded too simple for their relationship, but he would rather die than admit it to Adam. “And?”

“Just saying what I was thinking,” Adam said.

“Hey, what’s up?” Tamilya asked.

“Nothing. Did you get hold of Addie?” Marcus asked.

“Yeah. She’s sending what she knows about the op. She’s actually on her way out the door.”

“For the day?”

“No. She’s retiring. Got some big job with that Jansen and Associates. She’s only going to be at the FBI until the end of next week.”

He said nothing else. He didn’t like the woman and never would. During their time together, and actually before that when they’d just been friends, Marcus thought Tamilya’s supervisor took advantage of her. Addie was smart, but Tamilya was smarter and definitely more capable. He’d never seen an FBI agent so young whose instincts were so well developed. He’d kept his thoughts to himself until she threw Tamilya to the wolves.Thatwas unforgivable.

“Did you have some people we can hunt up?” she asked Adam.

He nodded. “Yeah. I shot the list to you both.”

“Good, you can go over them because you’re better at that,” Marcus said. “And I want to stop by the hotel. If they’re holding the room for us to look over, I want to do that before they revoke the privilege. Elle is working on the autopsy, so we should have those results when we get back.”

She slanted him a look as her lips turned down. “But that means you’re driving.”

He frowned. “Yeah.”

“Fine, but don’t put any Willie Nelson on today. I’m not in the mood,” she said brushing past him as she made her way to the door.

“Ah, but every day is a good day when Willie is singing.”

She muttered something under her breath, and he smiled. She might be irritated with him, but spending the day with Tamilya was better than a day without her. Even if she was ticked off at him.

“Text if you need us for anything,” he said to Adam and followed Tamilya out of the office. He had no problem walking behind her. She had a sassy little sway to her hips that he always enjoyed. It matched the sass in her voice. She’d spent most of her childhood in the South and it was clearly evident in her voice. It was another thing they had in common.

“Did Addie have any ideas?”

She shook her head. “She’s really out of the loop on this one. Since it was an op that would continue on for a while after she retired, she didn’t have anything to do with interrogating Golubev.”
