“I heard of him. Not much mind you, because my area was usually in Eastern Asia. There are a few possibilities I’ll text you.”

“You’ve heard of him,” Tamilya said. “How?”

“There’s been a few rumors about him for years, but I always thought he was kind of a blowhard.”

“Something tells you he wasn’t?”

“Not really. I still think he’s an asshole, but I recently heard he put out a buy for some C4.”

“Just openly asking for it?” Marcus asked.

The guy shrugged. “I understood he wasn’t too smart. That’s how he got pinged by the FBI I think.”

“But that wasn’t here, was it?” Tamilya asked.

He shook his head. “That was on the mainland. Virginia.”

“Virginia?” she asked, a hitch in her voice.

“Yeah. There were always rumors that he had something to do with that mall bombing.”

Ice sunk into his bones. He looked at Tamilya. She blinked and then glanced at Marcus. The questions in her gaze were filling his head. They both turned back to Dennis.

“Virginia Star Mall?” Marcus asked.

“Yeah, although I heard that he didn’t have anything to do with that.”

“Okay. But nothing lately?”

“Just that bit about the C-4, but most people thought he was involved at the time. When he was alive, he hung out with Dave Li.”

“Li?” Marcus asked.

“I know of him,” Tamilya said. “He’s got ties to the Chinese government.”

“Yeah. Him. And he’s on the island, but I don’t know what he’s doing here. Could be he’s just got a little business. I don’t ask too many questions because the guy is seriously insane.”

“Business?” Marcus asked.

“He’s a trafficker. Mainly for labor.”

“Lovely,” Tamilya said, sarcasm dripping from the word.

“Hey, don’t look at me. I dealt arms, that’s it. I walked away when I met Francie.”

She nodded. “So, he knew this Li?”

“Yeah. And from what I know, Li has been known to do favors for the Chinese government. I mean more than usual.”

“Favors?” Tamilya asked.

“Yeah. Targets in Taiwan, things like that. When they don’t want it to tie back to them, they hire contractors. He’s one of their favs.”

Whatever was going on, it could be an issue for them. And if the Chinese were involved, it made more sense. Hawaii was a prize in the middle of the Pacific. PACCOM—the Indo-Pacific Command Forces at Camp Smith—was going to have a field day with this. If Golubev’s murder was more than just a hit for money, they were going to be royally screwed.

“Anything else you can tell us?” Marcus asked.

“Not really. I told Adam I’ll ask around. I still have family in the business, and they aren’t going to be happy with some of this landing on their doorsteps.”
