“I’ve been laying low.”

“Why are you doing that? We have a situation to plan.”

God, Americans. They were a bunch of assholes. They talked in code as if they expected to be caught. No one knew what they were talking about. The situation.

“And I have to make sure I don’t get arrested. Or was that the plan?”

He suspected as much. There had been once or twice he’d thought about turning himself in. It wasn’t unheard of for spies to do that, and then get traded back to their own countries. Unfortunately, he hadn’t completed his mission, so he would not get a hero’s welcome back in China.

“That wasn’t my plan at all. Golubev started getting antsy.”

That was a lie. The Russian had been an idiot. It was amazing that he had made it out of Russia alive and, of course, it took him just a few years to get found out again. His big mouth always got him in trouble. One of the worst things about him was his arrogance. The man had thought he was an elite spy. Imbecile.

“Li?”

He said nothing as he rose from the bed and went to the sliding glass door that led out to his balcony. He could see just the outline of Diamond Head now, the glittering Waikiki lights illuminating the crater. He loved Hawaii. If he turned himself in, then got traded back to China, he wouldn’t be able to return. If he didn’t get traded back and turned on his counterpart, his days were numbered. Putin might have a lot of poisoning in his background, but so did the Chinese.

“We have a plan in place. You know that.”

“I just want to make sure everything is in place.”

“Why wouldn’t it be?” he asked, irritation growing by the second.

“It’s just hard logistically.”

“You’re the one who picked Hawaii. You never really explained that.”

“The reason isn’t important. You are being paid to get things in place, not ask me about motives.”

Anger tinged the edges of her voice. He smiled. Pissing her off was the one joy he would get out of this day.

“Of course.”

“Call me when you have the materials we need.”

“When are you returning?”

“Soon. I have to wrap up a few things here.”

Great. He was hoping she wasn’t coming back at all.

“Okay. Anything else?”

His question came out more sarcastic than he wanted. After a moment she responded.

“No. Just make sure you answer your phone when I call.”

“Of course.”

Then he clicked off his phone knowing it would piss her off that he didn’t wait for a goodbye. He didn’t give a damn. When he signed on to do this job, he didn’t know it would go sideways so fast. As he looked at his reflection in the window, he wondered if he would make it out of this job alive.

ChapterEight

The next morning, Marcus woke up before the sun. Nothing new for him. It happened a lot, and he liked it that way. Even on his down days. He’d rather catch a nap on his day off than sleep in. Plus, he hated waking to an alarm. Being jarred awake like that was shitty way to start the day.

He sat up in bed and rolled his shoulders. It hadn’t been easy to sleep with Tamilya in the room next to his. When he finally did go to sleep, he had erotic dreams of her, mixed in with odd clues from their case.

With a groan, he slipped out of bed and stood up. Of course, his cock bounced up against his belly. The woman was more than he could handle in their earlier relationship, and she really was beginning to get to him again this many years later. If she had known how close he had been to turning around and giving her exactly what she wanted…well, let’s just say he was walking a tightrope. One little stumble would throw him over the edge.
