“What?” she asked.

He realized he had been sitting there staring at her like an idiot. He couldn’t help it. Since he had first found out she had moved to the island, he had that same feeling. Everything she did seemed special.

“Marcus?”

Now she sounded worried. He shook his head trying to gain control of his thoughts, but it wasn’t exactly easy.

“Sorry, just admiring the view.”

She nibbled on her bottom lip and he groaned.

“What now?” she asked, her tone telling him he was pushing her limits.

“That little move is sexy.” Everything she did was sexy. She could burp the alphabet and he would probably think it was sexy.

“Biting my lip is sexy to you?” He nodded. “Weird.”

“No. I think just about every heterosexual man would agree with me.”

She rolled her eyes. “You need to get your signals straight. Either you want me, or you don’t.” She stood to walk back into his apartment. He should just let her go, but he couldn’t let her error in thinking go unchecked.

He reached out and encircled her wrist with his fingers. So delicate, but damned tough. She stopped walking but tugged on her arm. He tightened his hold to let her know that he was serious.

“What?” she asked.

“I never said I wasn’t interested, Tammy.”

Her jaw flexed, but she said nothing.

“What I said was that I wanted more this time around. I don’t want to let off steam and then go our separate ways. I wantmore.”

She sighed and her shoulders slumped. “Okay. I get it. But what if I just want that.”

His breath caught in his throat, and he felt as if his world had tilted. She had told him she loved him years ago, but now she wanted nothing more than sex? Not buying it.

“Then I guess we’re at an impasse.”

“Are you serious?”

“I’ve never been so serious in my life.”

He let her go then, but said, “You’re welcome to continue to use my guest room if you want to go get some clothes at your house. We might be on call a lot if something else is uncovered.”

“But not your bed?”

He shook his head unable to speak. He knew he was damning himself to torture, but he couldn’t help it. Plus, having Tamilya in his apartment had to be better than being separated. He’d just spend a lot of time in cold showers relieving himself.

She turned to leave, and he let her go this time. He didn’t regret telling her what he wanted. It was going to suck if she didn’t at least try being serious, but he didn’t think he could have it any other way.

He sighed, sent a prayer to the heavens for hope, and decided to get ready for work. Sitting there sulking wasn’t going to help.

Tamilya was still fumingwhen she arrived at work. Well, not really fuming, but she was irritated. The man had some nerve. She had wanted more years ago, but he had made it clear he wasn’t interested. They never stayed at each other’s homes, like he said. He might have chosen to leave on his own accord, but when she left, she did so because she knew he didn’t want her to stay. Or had he? Had she missed the signs?

Mentally, she shook her head. He had walked out when she had said she loved him. That was when he decided to give her some space. Butthead.

She glanced at him and what she was thinking must have shown on her face. He frowned.
