“I’m sure everything is going to be just fine,” she said, rubbing his arm. “I understand wanting to have kids close together in age.”

“You do?” Marcus asked.

“Yeah. It takes a lot out of you to do that, but truthfully, part of your career will always be on hold. Kids come first, right? So, you will always want to make sure that you have time for them, especially when they’re little.”

“Hmm,” Marcus said, pulling to a stop at the next checkpoint.

As they pulled away into the final area, she realized Graeme was studying them. “What?”

“Is there anything you think you need to tell me?”

“No.”

But she felt heat crawling up her neck. Marcus said nothing.

“Ah, I see the way of it. I heard you were staying with Marcus. Everyone thinks you’re sleeping in his guest room.”

“And everyone is going to find out about Elle’s pregnancy if you don’t keep your lips shut,” she warned.

“Och, okay. There’s no reason to be so mean.”

Marcus parked in the area where most law enforcement were located.

“I’ll get the table,” Graeme said before he hopped out of the truck.

“Thatwasmean,” Marcus said with a laugh. “Would you really tell everyone?”

“Good God, no. I would never do that to Elle. I just didn’t want everyone knowing about us right now. Especially since we don’t, you know?”

“No. I don’t know.”

“Wedon’t know what is up with us. The added pressure of the others knowing and the bets that are flying round…I would rather just keep it between us.”

He nodded. “And you’re wrong.”

“Wrong about what?” she asked as he opened his door and stepped out of the pickup. She followed him.

“Wrong about not knowing what’s going on with us. Idoknow.”

She grabbed him by the shirt before he could pull away from her. “What are you talking about, Floyd?”

He rolled his eyes. “Do you think we have time for this?”

“You’re wasting time just asking that. Tell me what you meant,” she demanded from behind clenched teeth.

“I told you I wanted something serious. I said I wanted to take my time. You pushed it. Now you’re going to have to deal with me.”

“Deal with you?”

“Yeah. I’m going to be around for a long time. Get used to it.”

When he pulled away from her the second time, Tamilya let him go. She was too stunned by the comment. He grabbed something out of the bed of the truck and held it out to her. For a long moment, she stared at him, confused.

“Lowe, we don’t have time for this,” he barked.

It was exactly what she needed. She shook herself out of the stupor, grabbed the bags and started off behind Graeme. She didn’t have time for him, not now…maybe not ever. Not in that serious way.

The moment she thought that, her stomach tightened. Damn. She didn’t have time to be preoccupied with Marcus, their relationship, and any other idiocy that came to mind.
