“I didn’t know you were retiring until you told me.”

Addie pulled out her tablet and Bluetooth keyboard. “I just had enough. I got sick of seeing men moving forward, while the women kept having to fight for the small number of positions they would offer us. I could only take it for so long. And let’s be honest, if you had been a man, they would have slapped you on the wrists and then let you go back to work. We will always be at a disadvantage.”

“But you’re going to work in the field?”

“Private company. Same thing, more money, better hours. What you used to have before you moved to TFH.”

Tamilya sighed. “Yeah. Sadly, I missed the action. I got bored with working security measures for dignitaries and rich people.”

Addie closed her eyes and sighed. “I can’t wait.”

When she opened her eyes, Tamilya felt the kinship they’d had between them. They had clicked immediately. They had nothing in common, other than their FBI background, and even that was different. But they both believed in the law. No black or white, just right or wrong.

“So, let’s get started,” Tamilya said.

“Yeah. The sooner we get done, the sooner I get to a beach.”

“Planning some time in Hawaii?”

She nodded. “I haven’t been here before, and I want to take a few days to spend on the island.”

“I can’t blame you. This place definitely gets in your blood.”

Marcus was sittingin front Del remembering the time that he and his best friend Freddy had blown up the chemistry lab. They had snuck into the room to play with chemicals. Yeah, he had been a nerd. But what they hadn’t expected was to make some miscalculations. Sitting in the principal’s office and sitting in Del’s office, felt the same. If his mother was nearby, he would worry she would appear and smack him upside the head again.

“So.” Del said the word as he leaned back in his chair. Adam sat off to the side.

“You said a lot there, boss,” Adam said with a smile.

“We need to know if this is going to affect your mission,” Del said.

“No.”

“Are you sure of that?”

Marcus nodded.

“And you thought it was a good idea to get it on in her office?” Adam asked. There was more humor than recrimination in his voice.

“We didn’t do anything here. First, that’s disrespectful to Tamilya and TFH. Second, she’d kick my ass if I tried. And third…”

He glanced up at the corner of the office and Del looked behind him. When he turned back around, understanding stamped his features.

“Yeah, good, because while I think anyone in TFH would only use it for betting purposes—and yeah, I know that is still going on—I would hate to think what would happen if it ever leaked.”

Marcus held up his hands. “Promise. It would be damned near impossible to do anything on those cots.”

“Desks work,” Adam said. They both turned to him.

“Is that an observation or from experience?” Del asked.

Adam’s mouth twitched. “Just a thought. No experience.”

Del turned back to him. “But you thought you needed to sleep in there…”

“I was in front of her.”
