“You think you would leave the FBI?” Adam asked, surprise in his tone.

He shook his head. “No, but if they try to transfer me, I will. Both Charity and I want to stay here.”

“Thank God for that,” Del said. Marcus couldn’t hide his smile. No one would want to give up one of the best forensic scientists in the biz.

“But I’ve looked around and I’ve even talked to Dillon about a job. Definitely better pay, and March has a shit ton more experience than I do. She would get top dollar for her skills.”

There was a knock at the door, and it was Charity. “Hey, seems there’s a meeting of the minds in here.”

“Do you need something?” Del asked.

“Yeah, we just had another text and I’m tracing it right now.”

“Right,” he said. “Get everyone in the common area. TJ, get hold of Smith and let him know we have another text.”

“Already done. He’s on his way in,” Charity said with a smile. Then she shut the door and left them alone.

“Okay, so we have an asshole who definitely thinks he can mess with Tamilya,” Del said, his voice threaded with anger. Marcus understood. She might have been with them for a short amount of time, but she was one of their own.

They walked out into the common room. The tables were always set in a u-shape. Cat, Drew, Autumn, and Graeme sat on the right side of the tables. Tamilya and Addie on the left. Marcus didn’t hesitate. He walked over and took the seat next to Tamilya. She looked cool but Marcus knew better. He knew this was getting to her. Her hands were under the table and when he reached for one, he felt it fisted. He pried it open and took hold of her hand. She tightened her grip and he felt his nerves ease a bit. Not all the way, because for her to react that way, it had to be something horrible. He leaned closer to ask but Smith came rushing in.

“Hey, TJ, whatcha doing here?” he asked.

“I was dropping Charity off and stopped in to talk to Del when the text came in.”

“Ah,” he said, as he took the seat next to TJ, who was sitting next to Marcus.

Del was seated next to Charity. Adam stood in the background as Charity tapped on her tablet.

“This came in at seven oh five this morning.”

The screen came to life and the words he saw chilled his blood. He had been right, even though he didn’t want to be. This was more about Tamilya than anything else.

The minutes keep ticking and you keep running in circles. I will enjoy watching the life drain from your eyes when I kill you.

ChapterSeventeen

The moment Charity had told her what the text said, Tamilya knew what she had to do. There was one way to get this bastard, she needed to be the bait. It was the fastest way to get at the bomber. If he wanted her, she would throw herself out there like a big ass Neon sign.

Marcus was still holding her hand. He tugged on her their joined hands and leaned close enough to whisper.

“I know what you’re thinking, and I have to object.”

Dammit. Most women would love that a man knew them so well, but she didn’t. Not right now. She was a target, which meant the hulking mass beside her could get hurt. She couldn’t allow that. Not because of her.

She never wanted anyone to get hurt, but there were people in her life she would die to protect. Dead stop. Her family being at the very top of the list, and then there was Marcus. She turned and he was still close. The anger in his dark eyes would scare most women. Hell, it would scare most men. But not her. She knew what had to be done, and she would get Del to agree.

“Del, I need to talk to you,” she said without taking her gaze from Marcus.

Their boss studied the two of them, then nodded. He rose from his seat.

“Cat, I want you to go back to the safe house. I know we have HPD there, but I want one of our own with the Lowes.”

“Sure, boss.”

“You’re tracing it, yes?” he asked Charity.

“Yeah, but I’m expecting it to be a burner.”
