“Yes. I’ll get him for you.”

She fiddles with a few more buttons and then walks out the door, and I close my eyes as I search my mind for whatever happened that put me here.

Moose’s.

Adam’s birthday.

Steve.

I remember fighting. I remember being pulled off him and taken to the back office. But after that? There’s not much recollection of anything.

The door opens and in walks Officer Hunter.

“Fuck.” Dropping my head back onto the pillow, I can only imagine what he’s going to say.

“That about sums it up, Bill.” He walks closer and I take in his uniform, knowing this seems more official than friendly. “How are you feeling?”

“My head is pounding. My shoulder is screaming. I could use a few more pain pills. Can you get that nurse for me?”

“I will ask, but I don’t think they’re going to give you anything stronger than what they already have.”

I try to push myself into a better sitting position with one arm. “Where’s my brother? The nurse said she was getting him.”

“I’ll get him when we’re done here,” he answers firmly.

“What’s going on? Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Billy. Listen carefully to me. I’m sure you don’t remember much of last night but-”

“I do. I was at Moose’s with everyone. Did that asshole Steve press charges? Is that why you’re here?”

“That’s part of it.”

My mouth is dry, and my heart is racing because I can’t remember much and I have a feeling I’m not going to like what comes out of his mouth next.

“Bill, I can’t bury this one. You wrecked last night. If you had hit another car there would have been a fatality. You wreaked of alcohol and my Chief showed while we were on scene because he heard all the chatter on the radio. Your initial assessment by the EMTs showed your pupils were blown and your heart rate was jacked up.”

“No shit,” I scoff petulantly. “I had just been in an accident.”

“No, Bill. It’s more than that.” He stops talking and takes a breath. “They found cocaine in your truck.”

My heart sinks. There’s no way to hide it. I might be able to wave off telltale signs of use, but if they found proof there’s no way out of it.

Adam tried to follow me around after the Steve incident, but I managed to dodge him eventually. Seeing Steve set my anger on fire and I had to do something to take the edge off.

Even right now, the craving for a quick hit is overwhelming. I just need something to make me feel human again.

Closing my eyes, my head drops against the bed again, and Vincent says, “Tell me what happened.”

I squeeze my eyes shut, images flash, but nothing makes sense. “I don’t remember.”

“Billy. I need something from you. Your brother said you were fighting in the bar. He said you were so out of control and that’s not like you. Did you use at the bar?”

I shrug, groaning in pain as my injured shoulder objects to the movement. “Where’s my mom?”

“She didn’t come, Bill. Your dad wouldn’t let her until he knew what he was walking into.”

I shut my eyes tighter against the tears stinging behind them. “What’s going to happen?”
